"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are cre ated equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain un alienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." After this opening statement, our forefathers listed 27 complaints that claimed that life was unbearable under these conditions. The Colonists tried repeatedly to change these unbearable condi tions by legal and humble means, but to no avail. Then after years of struggle, five men, totally commit ted to the cause of Freedom, worked secretly a year and a half to produce "the document, the words of which were heard around the World. — "in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES;" The life of this "Declaration" and what it accomplishes are depen dent on our actions today. Our fu ture depends on how we continue to uphold these principles and how we meet our obligations. Are we mutually w illing today to pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor to continue to enjoy Freedom of speech and worship? Are we equally w illing to work for condi-' tions that w ill erase Want and Fear? These freedoms obtained for us in 1776 and maintained for 1-90 years by the Citizens of the United States, depend on us to secure them for future Americans. Yes, truly, Independence Day can be appropriately called Dependence Day. Let us pledge our allegiance this Fourth of July to maintain our Freedoms. Will P. A rotating li brary is going around. It comes from the Sandy Opportunity Cen ter and it goes to the camps in the Sandy and Gresham areas. ¿is hora para leer? Una bibli- oteca mobil esta circulando. Viene del Centro de Oportunidad de Sandy y va de campo en campo en los areas de Sandy y Gresham. La^ persona encargada es Elaine Furamoto, voluntaria de VISTA. The person in charge is Elaine Furamoto; VISTA Volunteer: This library on wheels goes to the following camps: Beeker, Ed monds, Griffin, Sandy, Green ¡Acres, Paradise Acres, Fujimoto, Hensley and Sturm Camps. Miss Furamoto w ill appoint a person from each camp to take care of the books and they w ill form her Camp Library Committee. Different books w ill be circulat ed each week to the different camps. There is a growing awareness that migrants need recreation, es pecially the children. "It is our hope," one of the Salem staff members said, "that children w ill find joy in reading books and that they w ill learn to use the nearest library." The Salem Center is indebted to the Clackamas Library and. to the Migrant Ministry o f Multnomah for the supply ofdrooks.
