Page 3 Valley News Notes A dance was held last Friday evening in the Aum sville Commun ity hall. It was sponsored by the Opportunity Center Teen Club in West Stayton. Another d a n c e is planned for this Friday evening from 8 until 12 p.m. Dancing w ill be to Spanish and rock and roll records. Refreshments w ill be sold. Everyone in the area is. invited. Farm workers in the Independ ence area w ill have a chance for a free swim twice a week at the city pool. Paula Alvarez, de Inde pendence, fue operada en el Salem Memorial Hospital el viernes pa sado. Su esposo, Lupe Alvarez nos dijo que ahora ella se encuentra mejor. Los del VML en Independ ence le envían sus mejores deseos y esperan verle en casa muy pronto. Ivan Wells, director o f Independ ence O pportunity Center, said the center has r e n t e d the swimming pool every Tuesday and Thursday morning for five weeks. Hours are 10 a.m. till noon. Mr. Wells said adults and children are welcome. Miss Jacquie Bayette, a VISTA Volunteer, w ill give swimm ing les sons to the children. Two lifeguards also w ill be on duty. ' Mrs. Paula Alvarez o f Independ ence was operated on in the Salem Memorial Hospital last Friday. Her husband Lupe Alvarez told us that she is feeling m u c h better now. Members o f the VML staff in Inde pendence send their best wishes and hope to see her home soon. If so, you still have a chance to bring your chil dren for an examination. A well-child and immunization clinic w ill be held in W oodburn on August 31. That w ill be on a Tues day evening. It w ill be held be tween 5:30 and 9 p.m. in St. Luke's Parochial School. Children w ill be given free ex aminations and free immunizations. T h e y are the handiw ork of women and young people at the center's nightly ceramics class. Members o f the class make ash trays, cups, plates and animal fig ures. The teacher is Mrs. Ardath O rt of Hillsboro. She s h o w s the class how to make molds and paint the objects. She helps class mem bers put the m o ld s in a kiln, a special, very hot stove. The heat of the stove melts the paint and makes the c e r a m ic objects very shiny. People in the class take their cer amic w ork home to use and enjoy. Objetos de c o lo r e s brillantes están en exposición en el Centro de Oportunidad en Hillsboro. Son el resultado del trabajo de las señoras y jovenes en las clases de cera’mica todas las noches en el centro. M ie m b r o s de la clase hacen ceniceros, posillos, platos y figuras de animales. La profesora es La Sra. Ardath Ort de Hillsboro. Ella les enseña como hacer moldes y pintar los objectos. Ella ayuda a los miembros de la clase a poner los moldes en un horno especial muy caliente. El calor de este .horno derrite la pintura y hace las cerámi cas muy brillantes. La gente de la clase lleva su trabajo a la casa para usarlo y disfrutarlo.
