Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, February 11, 2004 (Continued from page 3) institution of marriage was not created by government, and it should not be rede- fined by government. Marriage is a funda- mental and universal social institution. It encompasses many obligations and benefits affecting husband and wife, father and mother, son and daughter. It is the foundation of a harmonious family life. It is the basic building block of society: The development, pro- ductivity, and happiness of new generations are bound inextricably to the family unit. As a result, marriage bears a real relation to the well-being, health and en- during strength of society. Because of marriage’s pivotal role, nations and states have chosen to pro- vide unique benefits and incentives to those who choose to be married. These benefits are not given to single citizens, groups of friends, or cou- ples of the same sex. That benefits are given to mar- ried couples and not to singles or gay couples has nothing to do with dis- crimination; it has every- thing to do with building a stable new generation and nation. It is important that the defense of marriage not become and attack on gays, on singles or on non- traditional couples. We must recognize the right of every citizen to live in the manner of his or her own choosing. In fact, it makes sense to ensure that the essential civil rights, pro- tection from violence and appropriate societal bene- fits are afforded to all citi- zens, be they single or combined in nontraditional relationships. until all the timber has rot- ted to the point that it is no longer feasible to harvest it. This is a terrible waste of raw materials, as well as the economic boon to the valley the jobs would have created. All gone because of the actions of these few people. I guess that makes us newcomers. This valley was full of people who had been born, raised, married, and then raised their own children right here. There were op- portunities and family wage jobs; many tied to the timber industry. Today, our young adults must leave their homes because there are few family wage jobs available anymore. Why is this so? Because other newcomers came and sys- tematically destroyed the industry that once thrived in this valley for many years. We have sat by and watched them do it. The radical environmentalists of the “Siskiyou Pro- ject” (and other such groups) have decided what they think are the best in- terests of the Illinois Val- ley (when in fact their in- terests are what’s “best for them”) and that is: keeping everyone but them out of our forests. Their practices of ap- pealing every decision, threatening and filing law- suits, and the endless liti- gation to prohibit all log- ging has (besides ruining our local economy), con- tributed greatly to our for- ests becoming so overrun with volatile fuels that fires such as 2002’s Bis- cuit Complex were sure to happen. Now their actions threaten to further hold up the salvage of burnt timber James Crocker University of Portland announced that James Crocker of Selma, attained the Dean’s List for fall semester 2003.
