These events are designed to appeal to veterans and their families with many activities for both children and adults. Chinook Winds is proud to again host both the Veterans of Oregon Field of Honor, which features 1,000 American flags on display on the resort grounds over looking the Pacific Ocean, and the AVTT Traveling Wall & Cost of Freedom Tribute. The opening ceremony, including a candlelight vigil, will begin Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. with a Ride of Honor at the Wall followed by the release of wish lanterns over the Pacific. Presentation ceremonies for the Oregon Veterans Medal will take place Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. and Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. The Oregon Veterans Medal is a custom- designed, engraved medal signifying appreciation for the service and sacrifice of veterans who reside in Oregon. To qualify for the medal, an applica tion form must be completed in advance of the ceremony with proof of military service attached. Forms will be available at Chinook Winds one week prior to the presentation. All ceremonies will be held near the AVTT Traveling Tribute. Activities on Sept. 24 begin at 7 a.m. with an SOS Breakfast at Henry’s Light house Donuts in Lighthouse Square at the north end of Lincoln City. A plate is just $5 and proceeds go to the Oregon Coast Veterans Association. Walk or run it off at the 5K Run/Walk for Honor sponsored by Chinook Winds (see story at right). Bijou Theatre for a free showing of Good Morning, Vietnam at 11 a.m., sponsored by Chinook Winds, and afterward head down to the south end of town for free admission to the North Lincoln County Historical Museum to see Redheads to War Dogs, World War II on the Oregon Coast, beginning at 1 p.m. The Lakeview Senior Living Center will serve a free breakfast to veterans on Sept. 25 from 7-10 a.m. with a donation accepted from non-veterans. The Veterans Memorial Rededication, followed by the Oregon Veteran’s Medal presentation, will take place at 2 p.m. near the AVTT Traveling Tribute at Chinook Winds. A reading of the names of Oregon military personnel killed in combat in Afghanistan and Iraq will follow. At the historic Delake School, now known as the Lincoln City Cultural Center, Ron Gorremans will display military equipment and memorabilia from Sept. 21-30. Stop by the D River Wayside for the red, white and blue kite display, followed by a stroll on the beach where red, white and blue glass floats will be carefully placed along the miles of sand by Lin coln City VCB volunteers for people to discover as part of the critically acclaimed Finders Keepers promotion. The Taft Pioneer Cemetery Associa tion will fly American flags in honor of veterans buried in the cemetery and the local Lions Club will line city streets with American flags. Fly-overs, displays of vintage and new military equipment, a motorcycle run honoring Gold Star families, a motor cycle Poker Run and other events will be available to see and take part in during Celebration of Honor weekend. Families, individuals and organiza tions are welcome to place wreaths at the AVTT Travelling Tribute during the weekend. The 5K run/walk is on a challenging up-and-back course between Chinook Winds Casino and Chinook Winds Golf Resort, both owned and operated by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. The course is not for the faint of heart but is demanding in order to honor those service men and women who live to serve and protect our country. The finish will lead runners onto the Field of Honor with its 1,000 flags over looking the Pacific Ocean directly north of the casino. Awards will be given for top female and male finisher, age groups and veteran/active duty personnel. Veterans and active duty personnel will be honored and also will receive a free gift upon pick ing up their race packets. Pre-registration for the event is $30 and includes a T-shirt.
