Signature: __________________________________ . by Diane Rodriquez Eighteen local veterans were hon ored Nov. 9 during a ceremony al Siletz Valley School. Patrick Lemmon and Chuck Gerttula posted the colors to open the ceremony as the Round Slone Singers sang a flag song. School principal Robert Line then led the crowd - made up mostly of stu dents who honor the veterans annually during this ceremony - in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chuck Gerttula was the keynote speaker. He spent four years on active duty in the Army, then 25 years in the Reserves and National Guard. He also taught school in Siletz for 17 years. He stressed that a veteran can be almost anyone - and it probably was someone who worked behind the scenes providing medical care, for ex ample, or arranging lodging or find ing equipment. “I’m very glad to see the Siletz community and this school continue to honor veterans for what they've given to our country," he said. Each class, from kindergarten through 12th grade, recognized the as sembled veterans in some way - with a card or a poster, a poem or a handshake. The veterans also were given an opportunity to speak to the crowd. “I'm proud that the Siletz commu nity has turned out to honor us," said Frank Simmons Ed Ben, Siletz Tribal elder and Siletz School graduate.
