S iletz N ews Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians Vol. 35, No. 11 SCA OrColl E 70 . 06 5523 V. 35 no. 11 November 2007 November 2007 Siletz Tribal Restoration - A 30th Anniversary Celebration Part VII - Tribe Set to Make History, Again In the late 1960s, it became appar ent that the only way to preserve and First Tribe in Oregon to Achieve Restoration Will Celebrate Landmark Anniversary with Pow-Wow at Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City by Brent Merrill The people of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians have been mak ing history sinee time immemorial. On Saturday, November 17, they will make history again. That is the day the Tribe will cel ebrate three decades of efforts to main tain and preserve connections to the past and restore the foundations of an ancient culture. Tribal members and the public at large are being invited to par ticipate in and observe the celebration. The 30lh Annual Restoration Pow-Wow will begin at the Tribe's Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City at 6 p.m. Tradi tional drumming and dancing will highlight the event. All year long, the Tribe has been preparing to walk into the future. Lin ing the path along the way is the wis dom of the Elders. “We are inviting the public to cel ebrate our Restoration and commemo rate those Tribal members who made this all possible,” said Tribal Chairman Delores Pigsley about the Restoration event. “We want to share our story and let people know about those individuals that put the effort together and saw it through to completion with hard work and heart. We want to tell their story.” Reasons for the significance of this celebration go deep into the Tribe s history. “Restoration is important to remem ber because when the Tribe was terminated in 1954 much was lost,” said Pigsley. During this fifth summit, Oregon tribal leaders discussed the need for money and programs that address such issues as health care, education and economic development. Tribe Invites You to 30th Anniversary Restoration Celebration On November 17, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians will hold its Annual Restoration Pow-Wow at Chi nook Winds Casino Resort. The pub lie is invited to this free event, which begins with a grand entry at 6 p.m. Siletz cultural displays and Ameri can Indian vendors - with jewelry, beadwork, and other items tor sale - will be available throughout the day. This is the 30th‘h year the Siletz Tribe has celebrated the signing of Pub lic Law 95-195, which re-established government-to-government relations between the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and the federal govern ment.
