Tribe Supports Native Camp

The American Indian Culture Camp
2007 was held at the Rotary Camp in
Lees Summit, Mo., on July 5-9, 2007.
The Heart of American Indian Center-
Kansas City (www.haicindian.com)
and Haskell Indian Nations University
Extension Office (www.haskell.edu)
sponsored the camp.
I attend this camp 12 years ago and
now I am the head counselor and
teacher for the camp.
Students learned the following
three traditional stories on our universe
from the Kalispel Tribe of Washington/
Idaho (Moon), Anishinabe Tribe of the
Great Lakes Region (Big Dipper/Stars),
and the Muskogee Creek Nation of
Oklahoma (Sun).
Students learned facts through in­
teractive activities about the sun, stars
and moon using NASA materials. All the
crafts were tied to the traditional stories.
We also had a canoe trip (oldest
age group), graduation pow-wow,
swimming, Native games and special
speakers (American Indian firefighter,
IHS-dental and diabetes prevention
coordinator).
This camp is run solely on dona­
tions. The Siletz Tribal Charitable Con­
tribution Fund sponsored 150 T-shirts
and 150 bags with this year’s theme,
“Our Universe.”
NASA donated Native space ma­
terials, Wal-mart donated arts supplies,
Kansas National Education Association-
Student Program Haskell Chapter do­
nated snacks, and KNEA donated space
folders. Thank you to all our sponsors.
The participants were able to look
through a power-generated telescope.
This activity was sponsored by Haskell
Indian Nations University and Dr. Tom
Dickson, professor at Haskell.
Volunteers also make this camp
successful. Thank you to my brother,
Tim Stuart, for being my photographer,
counselor, snake catcher, and anything
else I needed him to do. Thanks to my
mom. Marlene Stuart, for being a coun­
selor and helping throughout the week.
Again, thank you to the Confeder­
ated Tribes of Siletz Indians for help­
ing make a child’s life a little brighter.
