TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS (----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | SiletzTribal Charitable Contribution | Fund Advisory Board Recruitment The Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund (STCCF) Advisory Board I is currently accepting applications from tribal members for a three-year I appointment beginning June 2006 through May 2009. Applications must be I । | | | | I I received by May 31, 2007. The STCCF Advisory Board is composed of seven members, currently including: Philip Rilatos Sr., Siletz Tribal Council representative; Cheryl Lane, Kathryn Dick, and Kurt Arden, Siletz Tribal members; Karen Gerttula and Mike Holden, non-tribal members agreed upon by the governor and tribal chairman, and approved by the Tribal Council; and Tim Buckley, non-tribal member selected by the tribal chairman and approved by the Tribal Council, from a list submitted by the governor. The board is composed of unpaid volunteers who receive travel reim- bursement only for attendance at meetings and distributions. Other public relations events also are eligible for reimbursement. The advisory board meets quarterly (January, April, July, and October) to review approximately 80 applications received from charitable organizations or local governments within the Siletz Tribe’s service area and American Indian entities or activities located anywhere in the United States for the fol- lowing purposes; education, health, public safety, gambling addiction, pre- vention, drug and alcohol treatment, housing, the arts, the environment and natural resource preservation, cultural activities, historic preservation, and ' other charitable purposes. Tribal programs are not eligible to receive contributions pursuant to the Distribution of Net Revenues Ordinances and Memorandum of Understand ing (MOU) between the state of Oregon and the Siletz Tribe. Hatfield Seeks Tribal Members to Interview for Ph.D. Samantha Hatfield is working on her doctorate in environmental science at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore. She is the eldest daughter of Oscar and Kathy Hatfield of Independence and is from the Goodell and Martin families. Samantha needs to interview Siletz Tribal members over age 18 who prac tice traditional knowledge and tech niques, and who are willing to be in terviewed for her school research study. Samantha’s study is aimed at show ing traditional ecological knowledge is worthwhile and valuable, providing important information about tribal members’ local environment. Tradi tional knowledge is used to guide hunt ing, fishing, eeling, and gathering prac tices, past and present. It’s also used to interpret weather and environmental conditions. When this project is finished, the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians will retain the interview tapes and tran scripts, and will receive a copy of Samantha’s dissertation. It is Samantha’s goal that this infor mation be used for the benefit of Siletz Tribal members, now and into the future. Family members who practice tra ditional knowledge are welcome to be interviewed together. Interviews will be roughly one hour in length and follow-up interviews may be arranged. Interested tribal members or those wanting more information can contact Samantha at 503-8384158, 503420-9654, or at singingbear@go.com. 1A Notebook - Female Referee Makes History in Boys Game by Scott Sandsherry, Yakima Herald-Republic Originally published March 2, 2007 Lest any members of the Old Boys Club wish to taunt Suzanne DePoe- Thompson for having the audacity to be a woman official calling a foul on one of their boys, save your breath: She won't hear you any more than she hears any ref-baiting. “You can't listen to that stuff,” says DePoe-Thompson, who is working this week’s IA boys tournament, making her the first female official to officiate a boys state tournament at the SunDome. She's one of several women work ing boys games in the Seattle-based Pacific Northwest Basketball Officials Association, and she also works girls games for the Seattle Officials for Women's Basketball. This is her third state tournament as an official, but her first on the boys side after working the 2003 IA girls in Yakima and the 2005 4A girls in Tacoma. “For me, it's just a different style of play,” says DePoe-Thompson, a Native American enrolled with the Confederated Tribes of Siletz (Oregon). “I can't say one's better than the other, but I enjoy working boys basketball.” DePoe-Thompson credits her hus band. Joe Thompson - a Div. I college official who this week has been working the West Coast Conference Tournament in Portland - with being her mentor. Good idea: College officials won't lis ten to you screaming at them, either. Congrats to Students of the Month Siletz Valley School and the Siletz Valley Early College Academy recently announced the students of the month for February. Our students in grades K-12 are recognized for attendance, academic achievements, citizenship, and positive behavior at our morning assembly.
