NOTICES New Hoses Speed Response to Fires by Diane Rodriquez “It's like laying a water main down the street with a big hose." said Derek Clawson, assistant chief of Central Or egon Coast Fire & Rescue (COCFR) in Waldport of the new fire hoses and re lated equipment the department pur chased with a grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund. In August 2006, the department received $24,130 to purchase 2,800 feet of hose to replace those that were wearing out. It also purchased fittings, adapters, and Storz. connections, which help the smaller hoses from surround ing departments adapt to the equipment used by COCFR. Lt. Charlie York said the department used its new equipment “the day after we got it on the trucks” at a fire near Yachats. "We had water to the engine in less than two minutes. There was almost no reving on the engine to pump the water through,” he said. The new hoses run from a fire hydrant to the fire engine, which pumps the water through other hoses for firefighters to use on a fire. AH of the new hoses are what’s called “field serviceable,” which means that if a hose blows a hole, the crew can cut it and reconnect it to the cou pling with a socket wrench. Each new hose also has been sten ciled with various fire department codes and also with a “G” to show it was pro vided with money from the grant. The COCFR fire district runs 24 miles up Highway 34. about two miles wide on either side of the highway. The ambulance district goes from Ona Beach to Big Creek and east to the county line. The department has 30 volunteers on its roster plus four paid staff. They operate from three stations with four engines, handling mostly medical calls and motor vehicle accidents. The de partment also has a water rescue team. "We get lots of little grants, but this is a big grant for us,” Clawson said of the tribal charitable grant. Both he and York said they couldn't thank the tribe enough for helping them to better serve the people in their district. Derek Clawson (center) and Charlie York explain to Kelley Ellis how their new fittings and Storz connections help other fire departments ’ equipment adapt to COCFR s new equipment. Central Oregon Coast Fire and Rescue hoses purchased with a tribal charitable grant are marked with a “G” On Feb. 2, a very happy Karen Carlson (SVFOL Board member) accepted $750 from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund (STCCF). The funds will pay for one year of liability insurance to cover volunteers during fund- raising activities. Raising funds for activities, programs, materials, books, and building maintenance is an ongoing effort. If you haven t already done so. please stop by and check out Siletz's awesome new library.
