CHINOOK WINDS CASINO RESORT Professional Boxing Returns with Commotion at the Ocean VI George Jones, Williams & Ree Highlight Anniversary Weekend As part of Chinook Winds Casino Resort’s 10th anniver sary celebration, renowned country singer George Jones will perform on June 24-25. With more charted singles than any other artist in any other format in the history of popular music, Country Hall of Fame inductee George Jones is one of the most legendary and prolific country singers. He has been awarded Top Male Country Vocalist 10 times and has had more than 50 Top 10 hits since his first in 1959. Jones’ hits include She Still Thinks I Care, The Grand Tour, Walk Through This World With Me, The Door, We're Gonna Hold On, Golden Ring, Near You, He Stopped Loving Her Today, Who's Gonna Fill George Jones Their Shoes, ¡'ma One Woman Man, and many more. Opening for George Jones will be the audacious comedy team of Williams & Ree, also known as “The Indian and The White Guy.” They’re not prejudiced - they make fun of everyone! Williams & Ree have been perform ing together for 30 years. During that time they have shared stages with such super- stars as Garth Brooks, The Oak Ridge Boys, Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers, and Randy Travis. They have worked as regulars on Hee Haw and co-hosted The Charlie Daniel's Talent Roundup. Their show is a lively, fast-paced mixture of comedy bits, social/ political commentary, and racial zings Williams & Ree entwined with original songs. Not lim ited to comedy, Williams & Ree were nominated for Best Vocal Duo by the Country Music Association in 1995. Tickets range from $50 to $70. Show time is 8 p.m. each night. Comedy on the Coast Features Indian Comedians As part of Chinook Winds Casino Resort’s 10th anniversary celebration, Comedy on the Coast will feature three American Indian comedians on June 10-11- Larry Omaha, Marc Yaffee, and Charles Sanchez. A former civil rights investigator, Omaha uses stand-up comedy to deliver his message on racism, sexism, and bigotry. Since 1990, he has toured America presenting his humorous perspective on life, reflecting the similarities of multi cultural America rather than the differences. Called “refreshing, funny, and univer sal” by the Los Angeles Dimes, Omaha has numerous television appearances to his credit, including Comedy Central’s Make Me Laugh, HBO’s Loco Slam, Showtime’s Laugh Festival, Fox TV’s Culture Clash, BET’s Comic View, and VH-l’s Stand-up Spotlight. Yaffee has entertained audiences at clubs, colleges, and casinos across the 22 • Siletz News • U.S. and doesn’t hesitate to pull the com edy trigger, targeting race relations, poli tics, and pop culture. He also has been seen at some of the top comedy clubs across the nation, including The Improv, Just For Laughs, The Punchline, Laugh Factory, and Catch a Rising Star. In addition to his television appear ance on Que Locos, Yaffee won the 2001 Gold Rush Comedy competition and writes for Laugh.Com. A regular at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, Sanchez has been making audi ences laugh with his fast wit and rip- roaringly funny characters. Described as a “comedian on a mis sion,” much of Sanchez’s humor comes from his views on being an American In dian “Chicano" American and coping with cultural differences and similarities. Comedy on the Coast begins at 8 p.m.; doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12. June 2005 Professional boxing returns to Or egon at Chinook Winds Casino Resort s Commotion at the Ocean VI on June 4. This year, many of the fighters hail from the Northwest, including Portland area fighters Marcus Pernell, Reggie Davis, and »Molly McConnell, and Tacoma, Wash., fighter Emmett “Laser” Linton. This year’s Commotion at the Ocean will include two co-main event matches. The night’s title fight is a 12-round junior middle weight bout for the now va cant UBA championship be tween Linton (33-3,15KOs) and Darrell Woods (22-10, 16KOs) of St. Petersburg, Fla. The second main event match of the evening will be an eight-round middle weight fight between Davis (13-2,6KOs) and Tom Wilt (18-3,4KOs) of Altoona, Pa. In her first six-round fight, McConnell (4-0, 1 KO) will take on Terry Blair (5-8- 1,3KOs) of Louisville, Ky. Jackie Kallen, McConnell’s manager and The Contender co-star, will be present for the fight. This should be an exciting match as McConnell and Biair faced each other in early April and McConnell won by a very close decision. She recently was nominated for the 2004 Harry S. Glickman NIKE Oregon Professional Athlete of the Year award and received the Women’s Boxing Archive Network’s 2004 Rookie of the Year award. Also on the undercard that night is Pernell (8-0, 4KOs). His opponent is yet to be decided. This Portland boxer’s fa ther is the well-known Ray Lightning” Lampkin. He was the first boxer from Oregon to go profes sional and ultimately fight for a champi onship, against Roberto Duran in March 1975. Last year at Commotion at the Ocean V, Pernell recorded his second first- round knockout. Tickets range from $35 to $ 150. Doors to these boxing events open at 6 p.m., with the first match starting at 7 p.m. This is an age 21 and over event. Chinook Winds Accepting Applications for Mentor/Protégé Program Chinook Winds Casino Resort is ex cited to announce the continuation of our mission to offer Siletz Tribal members an opportunity for management training at the casino, hotel, and golf course. The intent of the Mentor/Protégé Pro gram is to provide Chinook Winds with qualified Siletz Tribal members who will help form the future management team and to provide Siletz Tribal members with the proper management training and tech niques to succeed in the gaming industry at management levels. The Mentor/Protégé program began in May 2002. Chinook Winds has had two successful protégés promoted into super visory positions. Currently, two protégés are in their second year of the program. There now is one vacant spot in the program. Protégé Wage: $32,360.80 Job Summary: The length of the program will range over a three-year pe riod. The protégé will work in each de partment for a maximum of three months and/or minimum of one month. During this time, the protégé will have a curricu lum to follow in each department. The protégé will be assessed after completion of each departmental curriculum prior to moving to the next assigned department. Qualifications • • • Must be age 21 or older Must be a Siletz Tribal member Valid Oregon driver’s license High school diploma or GED One year equivalent work experience with administrative supervisor re sponsibilities (i.e., hire, fire, promote, • demote, evaluate staff) One year working experience in op erating computer using Windows OS, MS Office, Excel, and other similar • applications Must be able to obtain high security • gaming license Demonstrated initiative Desired Qualification • Two years of post-secondary educa tion or training or any equivalent combination that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties outlined in the protégé job description or curriculum established under the Mentor/Protégé Program. Conditions of Employment: Pass a pre-employment drug test and a back ground investigation to secure a high se curity gaming license. Must commit to the term of the Mentor/Protégé Program. Applications for the Mentor/Protégé Program are due by June 30, 2005.
