on the reservation. When I grew up, we
still used the bam he built. It was made
with pegs in the huge beams.
Martha Adams was bom on the res­
ervation. She was a wonderful mother
and farm lady.
One winter, so many tribal people
caught the flu and it turned into pneu­
monia. She took care of so many. When
she came home one night, she had the
same thing - pneumonia - and passed
on. She was a help to her tribal people.
She passed in 1930.
What a legacy; we are so grateful
for this. Their children are Inez Larsen,
Lena Tronson, Cecile Offield, Adelaide
Karnowsky, Raymond Clay, Russell
Adams, John Adams, and Mae Adams
Downey. May we not forget our heri­
tage and stay true to the same.

Our Adams reunion was represented
by grandchildren Nita Smith, Lucky
Miles, and grandchildren, Melvin
Downey, Ila Hoiness, Martha Lockhart,
Roy Downey, JoAnn Miller, Pete Downey,
Jean Garrett, Charlotte Noble, and Tom
Downey. So many great-grandchildren
and great-great-grandchildren.
John Adams was just a boy when
he was taken off the Rogue in 1840 and
brought to the territorial capital of
Champoeg, Ore. Eventually, he was
brought to Siletz and placed on the
Siletz like he was taken off the Rogue.
When I went to Chemawa Indian
School, my mother told me I was
Applegate Tribe, but grandfather was
taken near the Applegate River, a tribu­
tary of the mighty Rogue.
John lived to be elderly. He was a
farmer and a very trusted leader here
