TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Spring Basketball Tournament Rewarding for All by Shannon Case The Siletz Spring Basketball Tournament 2003 was dedicated to the memory of Clifford Case, Sr. This year, the tournament was a great success, bringing in 11 teams. Siletz was represented in all three brackets - 4,h-6th grade, 7lh-9,h grade, and 10th-12th grade. The only other Oregon team represented was the Chemawa Braves from Salem, who took second place. Other teams came from Suquamish, Yakima, Puyallup, Nisqually, and Tulalip. Siletz Housing residents and staff came together to plan and run the tournament. The residents deserve a big “congratulations.” The tournament committee deserves a big thank you! You’re appreciated very much - Bonnie Petersen, registration; Lani Cordova, concessions; Doc and Charlie, barbeque; Carol Blomstrom and DeAnn Brown, cleanup; Susan Trachsel, refereeing; Lori and Ami Case, score book; Ronell Welch, clock-keeper; Mitzi Brown, T-shirt sales; and Jessica Parr-Garcia, statistics keeper. Thank you Siletz community residents and tribal staff, Siletz Health Department for sponsorship, Chinook Winds for help with jerseys and water, Perry Johnson for his donation, Wendy Wawrak for her donation, youth services staff who helped in sales, Siletz School for use of the gym, and last but not least, the friends, family, and community who came out and watched the kids play ball. We saw a lot of happy faces and a lot of tired kids who played their hearts out. I’m proud to be a part of an activity that represents the Siletz Tribe and takes our name out into Indian Country. I hope everyone had a good time. Personally, I’d like to say thank you to my brother, Wazzy Case, and his family, Lori and Ami, for all their hard work; my daughter, Ronell, and Kelly for all their help; Fonda for pitching in wherever I needed you; Ardie, I couldn’t have spoken at the award ceremony and I’m so glad you were there for us; my mom, Elouise, for your moral support and for not caring that we did this on your birthday; and Micah for being the water boy. Congratulations to the following Siletz Teams; 1st place, 4,h-6th grade - Siletz Rez Rats Coach Wazzy Case; Tristen “T-Man” Metcalf, MVP; Mariah Garza, Hustle Award; Zach Bremner, All-star; Casee Case, All-star 2nd place, 7,h-9,h grade - Siletz Warriors Coaches Selene Rilatos and Kenny Paul; Danny Elgin, All-star; Cole Jackson, All-star 1st Place, 10,h-12,h grade - Siletz Nation Coach Charlie Butler; Brett Butler, MVP; Jesse Cordova, All-star; Robbie Jay, All-star Congratulations to my nephews, Cole Jackson and Casee Case, on their All-star awards.
