TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Salem Sixth- Graders Make Bracelets Art students had a great time at Parrish Middle School in Salem, Ore., learning about Native American beading as part of their experience in a sixth-grade exploratory art class. Students participated in creating their own four directions bracelets, taught by Leah Lyons, art teacher and former Siletz resident. Nearly 80 students are now the proud creators of their own version Marissa Galbreath of the four directions bracelet. Sixth-grader Marissa Galbreath, a member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon, stated, “... the colors were so colorful. It felt good to do something of my own tribe,” after she completed her bracelet. Students learned the that the four directions bracelet symbolizes the choices each of us makes every day and it reminds us of our responsibility to live in harmony and to show respect and kindness to all. Information about the four directions bracelets was obtained from Lisa Brown, a member of the Siletz Tribe who teaches area children beading traditions.
