Combine 21 young people and $75,000 and what do you get? A tobacco prevention program designed and produced by Siletz Tribal youth. These young people are developing a video, brochure, poster, and Web site as part of the American Legacy Foundation tobacco education media project. This is part of Legacy’s $21 million grant program to strengthen existing tobacco prevention and cessation efforts and create new strategies for addressing tobacco-related health disparities among American Indians and Alaska Natives. The youth and their projects include: Siletz, video: Shane Brown, Rhiannon Hamel, Apples Lane, Please see Missing Moccasins on page 19. Several youth spent two days in a studio in Portland, Ore., recording a song written by Shane and sung by Shane and Apples. While these two were recording, other youth filmed scenes for the video in a second studio. Apples stated, “When I was asked to sing, I thought it was a good idea because I sing sometimes at school and at church, but I’ve never really sang specifically for a good reason such as this project. I thought it would be a good way to get the message accross because a lot of people like music.” The youth have received a bit of help from some adults, including De Anna Pearl, American Legacy Media Project coordinator; Tom Wiecks from The Creative Department in Portland; See Youth on page 15.
