The ABA Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund will award $5,000 in financial assistance annually to each scholarship recipient attending an ABA-accredited law school. The deadline to apply is Feb. 28, 2003. For complete application information, visit www.abanet.org/fje/losfpage.html . An award made to an entering first-year student may be renewable for two additional years, resulting in financial assistance totaling $15,000. Evaluation criteria include whether an applicant is a member of a racial and/or ethnic minority that has been underrepresented in the legal profession; financial need; personal, family, and educational background; participation in community service activities; and the applicant’s personal statement. Question: When will I receive my reimbursement from the tribe? Answer: After your initial check is processed, you should receive your regular monthly check the first week of the month. Question: Is the reimbursement taxable? Answer: Yes, in some cases the reimbursement is considered taxable income. You will receive a form 1099 from the tribe. Question: My premium increased in January 2003. Will the tribe reimburse the increase? Answer: Yes. Please mail me the benefit statement you received from Social Security indicating how much your premium increased. Non penalized premiums in 2003 increased to $58.70 per month.
