It’s Happening at Chinook Winds ... by Teresa Simmons True Colors of the Oregon Coast Glass Ball and Glass Galore Art Fair 2002 handcrafted glass floats await discovery on the beaches of Lincoln City from Oct. 20, 2001, through May 27, 2002, celebrating the third year of a coastal treasure hunt on the Oregon Coast. “True colors of the Oregon Coast: Finders Keepers,” is the theme for the 2001-2002 float season. from 7:30-9 p.m., oral auction, and Glass Galore Art Show live dancing music until midnight. You may obtain tickets by calling the Lincoln City Visitor and Convention Bureau at 1-800-452-2151, or e-mailing events@lincolncity.org. Checks should be made payable to the Gala Glass Ball attend the Gala Glass Ball on Oct. 20 at Chinook Winds. Tickets for the ball are available at the Visitor and Convention Bureau. The tickets are $50 per person, which includes dinner, dancing, and a beautiful glass float crafted by one of the 11 artists participating in the 2002 glass float event. The Glass Ball begins at 6 p.m., To kick off the 2002 glass float season, dust off your glass slippers and with no-host cocktails and a silent auction, followed by a buffet dinner Highway 101, Suite 1, Lincoln City, OR 97367. The Glass Galore Art Show will be held Oct. 27 and 28 in the Convention Center. The show will feature more than 40 glass artists from the Pacific Northwest who will display and demonstrate their art, including blown, fused, etched, stained, and sculpted glass. The fair is free and the hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 28. I wanted to take a few moments to thank some folks for their love, prayers, and kind words. Many of you know that my wife, Ronda C. Austin (Williams), recently suffered with heart problems and was taken by ambulance to the intensive care unit in Newport and two days later was transferred to Corvallis for more testing. During this time, we received much love and support from family and the community. The night before my wife was transferred to Corvallis, a few young men asked me if it would be OK to come to the hospital and pray for Ronda. She has known two of these men since they were very young and lived on the same street as we do on Government Hill. These young men had just returned from a sundance in McDermott, Ariz., along with another brother of mine, Buzz Berry. They had sacrificed themselves dancing for our people for four days and nights without food and water. These young men were gifted with a pipe by an elder down there who was retiring and saw something good in these young warriors. They came to Ronda’s room in ICU at the hospital and performed a pipe ceremony in her room the night before she was transferred. They explained everything they were doing so Ronda, myself, and Ronda’s sister, Robina, knew how the prayer was being conducted. After the sacred pipe was loaded by all, song was offered and the pipe was smoked, asking for a blessing. After two days of testing at Corvallis, Ronda was released and sent home with no sign of a heart attack. It is our belief that the prayers of our relatives with God’s blessing healed my loving wife’s heart. So at this time I would like to publicly thank a few of our dear friends. I thank the Creator of all life for blessing us with life today and the spirit of our ancestors for praying for the future generations to have all these beautiful Indian ways right here in Siletz for us to use - our feather dance, sweat lodges, sundancers and sundance chiefs, Native American Church of Siletz, our elders, pow-wows, other tribal people learning more about the traditions and ways Indians think and view the world, and those who use conventional churches as well. We are truly blessed, relatives. If we don’t use these ways, they will go away again. Much love and thanks go out to Paul Butler, Rusty Butler, O.J. Pitawaniquit (Anisnabe), Buzz Berry - Native American Church Road Chief, Anna Becerra - N.A.C. Water Woman, Bill and June Austin for prayers and supporting our Native ways, Elouise Case and Ardie for love and prayers, and all of our relatives who had good words and prayers and much love to go around. I know I am forgetting someone, so we would like to ask the Creator to help us once again by taking care of that for us, as pitiful as we are. Thanks again relatives; we are lucky to have you! From your family and friends high atop Government Hill Brice Evan Fisher was bom on Aug. 28 at 3:33 p.m. His proud parents are Chris and Brenda Fisher of Lincoln City, Ore. Brice weighed 7 pounds, 15 1/2 ounces and was 20 inches long. His grandparents are Barbara Fisher Riggs and James Riggs of Lincoln City and Judy and John Hunter of Yakima, Wash. His great-grandparents include Jim and Winona Christensen of Yakima, Truman and Helen Hovis of Yakima, and Marie Chapman of Siletz, Ore. We are all very excited to have this addition to our family. He is the best baby ever! Happy 26th B-day to my brother, Michael David Keene, on Oct. 13. Hope this b-day is better than the last few. You better come see us soon!
