E 78 .06 S523 v. 29 no. 9 September hly publication by the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians twi 'LETZ NEWS Vol. 29, No. 9, September 2001 W/ Agnes Pilgrim Gets Cooking With Martha Stewart Television lifestyle guru Martha Stewart learned about Southern Oregon lifestyle and living fashions earlier this summer. Leaving the East Coast with a 10-member crew, she spent five days filming for a one-hour television special on the Rogue River. She explored canyons and the forested headwaters of the wild and scenic Rogue and Illinois rivers, including a day kayaking on the Rogue River. She and her crew were then treated to traditional baked salmon and fry bread cooked by Agnes Baker-Pilgrim and her son, Keith Taylor, and family. Agnes, an elder of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz, is one of the surviving descendants of the First Nation People, the Takelma Indians, who lived in this area for 22,000 years. After taking her first bite of salmon cooked on redwood sticks around a fish pit in the sand on the river’s bank, Martha said it was “ ... Aggie the best salmon I’ve ever tasted.” Aggie joked that Martha should “throw away her frying pan” and change to traditional methods that the First Nation Takelma had used for thousands of years. Aggie really enjoyed the day and felt honored to introduce Martha to traditional ways of cooking. An authentic canoe was carried to the river for Martha to ride in. George Fence, a full-blood Indian from Selma, Siletz News Confederated Tribes of Siletz P.O. Box 549 Siletz, OR 97380 Delores Pigsley, Tribal Chairman Brenda Bremner, General Manager and Editor-in-Chief Ore., along with Gray Eagle and others of Takelma, Ore., built the canoe. Aggie brought artifacts for Martha to see - a woven baby basket, cedar baskets, woven baby rattles, necklaces, hair ties, medallions, and various other woven and beaded articles. Aggie changed from cooking attire into her buckskin dress and explained the significance and materials used in her native attire. She put one of her beautiful basket caps on Martha and Leslie Lundy (I), Little Miss Siletz; Waleeska Riding In, Miss Siletz; and Tiffany Stuart (r), Jr. Miss Siletz, join Ed Ben and Rod Ben at the 2001 Nesika lllahee Pow-Wow. See additional photos on pages 10-12. Take Part in Run to the Rogue VII You are invited to join Siletz Tribal members on Sept. 13-15,2001, for Run to the Rogue VII. This 234-mile relay run/walk celebrates the continuing return of the Siletz Tribe to its ancestral lands along the Rogue River. The run begins in Siletz and follows Highway 101 to a location near Agness, Ore., at the confluence of the Rogue and Illinois rivers. Everyone can participate in Run to the Rogue in the following ways: Pilgrim (I) and Martha Stewart Keith’s son-in-law, Jai. Keith gave Martha a shell necklace. Aggie presented her with one of her own handmade small cedar baskets. The television special is tentatively scheduled for mid-September. Check your local listings. You can help get the run started by running or walking one mile on Sept. 13 if you are unable to take part in the entire three-day run. This group gets the main group of runners off to a good start each year. It is a very important part of making the run a success. Other runners/walkers can join the group as it travels south on Highway 101 and take part as long as they are able. Those who help in this way are very much appreciated by runners who continue through the night. People unable to run may volunteer for the support team. Our support team sets up base camp each afternoon where relay runners/ walkers can eat, shower, and rest until their next shift on the run.
