TRIBAL MEMBER NEWS Most Selected Honorary Team Captain for UO Above: Chet Butler and family attend the rededication. Left: Dub Bellinger (I) and Chuck Katon lead the presentation. Makayla Most is a member of the Junior Duck Club. She was chosen from about 1,500 children to be “honorary team captain” of the University of Oregon at its game against Utah on Sept. 8. As honorary team captain, Makayla got a field pass to go down on the field and watch the players practice. She also received a bag of Oregon Duck goodies - hat, pins, duck blower, football, and four free tickets. She also got to walk out onto the field after the players, where it was announced to the 45,000 people attending the game that she was honorary team captain; that she was Makayla Most from Siletz, Ore.; what sports she likes (softball, basketball, and football); and who her favorite college football player is - Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington - and her favorite NFL players - Jerry Rice and Steve Young. Congratulations, Makayla! Butler Honored as Veterans Memorial Rededicated The rededication of the Veterans Memorial, located next to Chinook Winds Casino, took place on Aug. 26. With plenty of blue sky and a breeze just sufficient to put the flags at full sail, it was a perfect day to remember those who have served in the United States armed forces. Approximately 250 people attended the rededication. The ceremony began with the honor guard, led by tribal member Dub Bellinger, bringing in the colors, followed by proud vets carrying the flags of their branch of service and several VFW posts represented. Several Siletz Tribal members took part in the ceremony, including Dub, who helped with coordination and announcing. OVMA President Chuck Katon and Andrew Donaldson opened the proceedings, speaking of the sacrifices veterans have made over the years and personally remembering their fallen friends from the Vietnam era. Scott Mason, manager of the Lincoln City Shilo Inn and a Vietnam War veteran, spoke of the Shilo’s commitment to vets and read a letter from Mark Hemstreet, who actually had the memorial constructed. Two World War II veterans were honored for their service. Darlene Hooley’s aide, Bill Ward, presented Mark W. Arehart with medals that he earned during the war but never received. Siletz Tribal elder and Bronze Star recipient Chet Butler, with his family in attendance, was presented with an eagle feather in honor of his war service. The Butler family sang a “warrior song” to honor all veterans and Dino Butler encouraged everyone to “make this a time of healing between all people, with renewed understanding that we are all brothers and sisters.” The honor guard opens the ceremony at the rededication of the Veterans Memorial.
