Portland Potlatch a Big Hit by Katy Kaady Thanks to everyone for coming to the Portland elders and youth potlatch in April, sponsored by the Portland-area Education Department. We had such a great time together eating delicious fry bread made by Kay Steele, Angie Artiago, Verdene Anderegg, and Lynn Chase. The fry bread was a delicious treat for everyone. Thanks also go out to Doris Riding In, Kay Steele, and Shirley Walker for all the bead and leather donations, as well as their expert advice in making dentalium necklaces. Harold Paul from the Four Directions Drum Group led our young, beginning Portland-area drum group and Rebecca Payne, Miss NIVA, performed an exhibition dance. Many folks brought in family memorabilia and regalia for display. The youth interviewed the elders and learned more about each other. The children made beaded necklaces, some people made dentalium necklaces, and others learned to make dream catchers, thanks to Connie Seaburn’s instruction. Thanks to everyone who came and lent a hand to make this a wonderful evening of celebration and getting together.
