It’s Happening at Chinook Winds • ••by Teresa Simmons Los Lobos to Perform Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the unique sound of Los Lobos on May 4 and 5. Los Lobos was founded in the early 1970s by David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Louie Perez, and Conrad Lozano, who met as students at Garfield High in East L.A. The four musicians had played a variety of different styles in neighborhood groups. Together, the four friends began studying the traditional Mexican music their parents played. The band developed a repertoire of some 150 traditional songs and played the acoustic instruments employed by their Mexican precursors — bajo, sexto, guitarron, jara requinto, and button accordion. In time, they became a fixture in East L.A. playing at barrio restaurants, weddings, and parties. May of 1980 saw them take their first step outside of East L.A., as an opening act for the local debut of the punk rock band Public Image, Ltd. at Olympic Auditorium. In 1982, they signed with Slash Records and released “And A Time To Dance,” recorded with Steve Berlin (now a band member) in 1983. They received a Grammy in 1984 in the newly instituted category of best Mexican/American performance for the traditional two-step “Anselma.” In 1987, Los Lobos found unprecedented commercial success after supplying the soundtrack for “La Bamba,” about the life and tragic death of Ritchie Valens, the first Hispanic rock ’n’ roll star. By 1996, Los Lobos were also increasingly in demand for movie soundtrack work, and contributed to the scores of such major Hollywood productions as “Desparado” (resulting in a third Grammy), “From Dusk ‘Til Dawn,” “The Mambo Kings,” and “Feeling Minnesota.” Los Lobos MAY . , Sun .. .
