Jim Kikumoto speaks at a welcoming reception as he takes the reins as general manager of Chinook Fourth Annual Spring Competition Pow-Wow in March The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians of Oregon will hold its fourth annual Spring Competition Pow-Wow at Chinook Winds Casino on March 24 and 25. Over the past four years, it has become evident that this is one of the most exciting Native events occurring each spring in the Northwest. The pow wow has grown phenomenally from one year to the next. Consequently, even though the casino has the largest convention center on the Oregon Coast, anticipated numbers this year have made it necessary to move the pow-wow to a larger area. It will be held outside the casino in a very large heated portable structure, similar to the ones used at many events throughout the region. 20 Dance competition will include adults, teens, youth, and golden age in Traditional, Grass, Jingle, and Fancy Dance categories. Specials will include Round Bustle (18 and over), Potato Dance (13 and over), Women’s Basketcap (open) and Tiny Tots (6 and under). Prizes for all adult categories from first to fifth place range from $500 to $100. Grand entries will be at noon and 7 p.m. on March 24 and noon on March 25.
