NOTICES BPA has $1 Million Available for Weatherization Program What is this weatherization program for enrolled Native Americans of a federally recognized Indian tribe? The weatherization program is sponsored by a grant from the Bonneville Power Administration through such organizations as The Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians. The program encourages energy conservation for moderate income households that have a fixed electric heat source (this electric heat source may not even be used or in working order) with a PUD as the electrical supplier. How does the weatherization program work to weatherize a home? First you must e-mail, call, or write to Scott Hansen (contact information listed at the end of this article) to request a weatherization intake application and complete it. Then the Community Action Program (CAP) people take a completed application and do a home energy audit. This computer audit tells the CAP people how best to insulate your home for energy conservation (for example, add insulation to the walls, floors, and ceiling; repair your electric heater if it isn’t working; replace a storm door; etc.). Renters are eligible, too! Lease arrangements, life estate agreements, and other home residences also are eligible for funds to weatherize their Native American residence. Now for the $1,000,000 question ... Is your home eligible? Your Share of $1 Million You’re electric bill can really go down. What’s the cost to you? For example: baseboard, in wall unit, electric furnace, etc. (This electric heat source may not be working or used; it just needs to be there for the audit. Sorry, portable room heaters don’t count.) ‘‘Eliminating Bias Crimes - Healing Our Communities,” will be held in Eugene, Ore., at the Eugene Hilton and Conference Center. The conference will feature programs for law enforcement, special programs for educators, continuing legal education, networking, workshops, and more. Conference hosts include the city of Eugene, the Coalition Against Hate Crimes, Youth for Justice, the Eugene Police Department, the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, and the office of the U.S. Attorney. Several nationally recognized speakers will highlight the program, including Judy Shepard, the mother of Matthew Shepard, the young Wyoming man who was brutally killed merely because he was gay. Judy Shepard is a powerful speaker who helps carry on Matthew’s legacy by working to help prevent hate crimes. OREGON HAT-CRIMES CONFERENCE 200 Hate Crimes Conference Set for Feb. 11-13 A unique coalition of government agencies and community advocacy groups is organizing the Statewide Conference on Hate Crimes, scheduled for Feb. 11-13, 2001. The conference, subtitled Income Change Recently? personnel and others about bias crimes through the Police and Community Programs of Facing History and Ourselves. Two moving theatrical presentations, The Right to Dream” and ‘‘Singing for Our Lives,” also are on the program. Workshops include Far Right Groups in the Northwest, The Jasper Texas Case, Organizing the Faith Community, Hate on the Internet, Mobilizing Schools/ Communities to Confront Hate Crimes, Racial Profiling, and many more.
