TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Youth Prevention Group Sets Meetings, Activities The Siletz Youth Prevention Group was formed to create a youth organization that can represent the youth of our community, and to increase the awareness of our community about alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) abuse. Members include Matt Baker, Ashley Taylor, Michael Brandenberg, Shane Brown, Noel Butler, Dennis Carey, Jack Cordova, Jesse Cordova, Candice Davis, D.J. Green, Dell Hall, Sammy Hall, Matt Hammett, Ryan Howell, Apples Lane, Joe Lane, Samantha Lynch, Michael Norton, Tom Smith, Wes Tyler, Andrew Whetstone, Jimmy Williams and Matt Williams. The group is open to youth age 12 to 24. The extended age is due to the opinion of the Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse staff who recently visited the Prevention Program? They commended us on our efforts to increase the youth and community awareness of ATOD risk and protective factors. The group’s current focus is to identify activities in the community and the resources available to make these activities happen. The youth group has decided to meet on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the old youth center to conduct business, followed by a friendly game of lollipops. Future meetings will discuss creating a youth newsletter to identify youth conferences, ATOD education, and community resources. All interested youth are encouraged to contact the prevention coordinator at 541-444-8333. Or you may contact the officers of the group as follows: Jimmy Williams, president; Ryan Howell, vice- president; Ashley Taylor, secretary; and Matt Baker, treasurer. Thank you to the people who purchased four directions/four races keychains from the Siletz Youth Prevention Group. The money they raised will fund activities. As of the first week in July, the group had raised $140. Thank you to Rose Bremner, Chuvonne Metcalf, Dixie Morford, Rhonda Ramsey, Barbara Danna, Dr. Forsythe, George Nagel, Sharon Mason, Selene Rilatos, Diane Rodriquez, Walt Klamath, Janet Dair, Kelli Brugh, Debbie Williams, Lisa Brown, Arlissa Rhoan, Kathy Stewart, Mike Bewersdorff, Michael Harris, Caroline Cruz, Nancy McCrary, and all of you who have placed orders for the next batch. We will find the support and resources to heal, renew, and rebuild. 2. Our journey is linked to the past. It is with our traditions, cultural values, and today’s knowledge that we will be able to restore, mend, and strengthen ourselves and future generations. 3. We will educate our children about the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, from the time they are in their mother’s womb until they pass from this world. The health, success, and well-being of future generations depend upon the strength of our message. 4. Healing of the individual and tribe go hand in hand. The well-being of the tribe is inseparable from the well being of the individual. 1. Goal One Insure that our people shall live in peace and harmony among themselves and with all other people, according to our Constitution. Strategy A - Review and update prevention plan goals, strategies, and data annually to assess program effectiveness. Begin 2000 prevention plan review by Sept. 15, 2000, and complete a 2001 plan by Dec. 15, 2000. Strategy B - Designate a yearly Prevention Day, the Friday before spring vacation, involving tribal communities and tribal programs, by 2001. Goal Two Build strong partnerships among tribal programs to reduce the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs by tribal youth. Strategy A - Provide an all-staff retreat by November 2000 that focuses on: / Fostering and maintaining respect for one another / Mediation training combining contemporary training with traditional practices Strategy B - The Prevention Planning Group will demonstrate partnership building by: / Meeting monthly ✓ Identifying committed partners / Identifying barriers to partnerships and meeting attendance / Communicating group progress with program staff / Making recommendations to management for developing staff and program partnerships Strategy C - Update the training report to create a pool of inservice trainers to provide inservice training opportunities at all staff meetings and other scheduled tribally sponsored activities.
