The Elders Gathering “Circle of Wisdom” was a hit. We had a great turnout and a great time visiting with old friends and making new ones. Speakers included Dee Pigsley with a welcoming address; Edmond Ben as emcee; Cathy Rasmussen with a diabetes presentation; Miranda Williams, who led exercises amid lots of fun and laughter; Sister Francella, who gave a beautiful Mother’s Day tribute; and Selene Rilatos, who opened with the Lord’s Prayer and gave a cultural presentation. Tribes that attended included Pi-Ne- Waus, Grand Ronde, Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw, and Coquille. The elders honored Eddie Sargent (banquets at Chinook Winds) with a dentalium necklace for providing not only wonderful meals, but also great service. Each year, there are more youth to serve, expenses increase, and funding just doesn’t go as far. Please take the time to volunteer or donate materials to make this year’s Culture Camp a success! Volunteers are needed to help with the following projects: making moccasins, cooking and cleanup for meals (proposals for cooking/meal planning now being accepted), basket making, flintknapping, cedar bark weaving, and photographing activities and participants. Donations of materials for activities or any ideas you have for a simple cultural project are needed. Please call to make arrangements to donate these items: buckskin for moccasins, obsidian, basketry materials, and beads. The most important thing you can bring is yourself. You are the most precious gift we have, so take the time to share. The next T-shirt design contest deadline is June 13. Send your ideas to Selene Rilatos.
