TRIBAL PROGRAM NEWS Apply Now for Summer Youth Jobs The tribal education specialists and area office supervisors will coordinate the Tribal Youth Employment Program (TYEP) for summer 2000. The program helps Siletz Tribal youth develop work habits that will benefit them as they mature. TYEP will place young people in a worksite that allows them to experience, learn, and develop job skills. Youth may work up to 180 hours through this program. Selection for the program will be based on the following criteria: A complete application submitted to the local tribal area office. Youth must be returning to school or enrolled in a GED or high school completion program. There is no income criteria to qualify for this program. • • • To apply, stop by the tribal office in your area and contact the person listed below. Youth age 14 to 16 with little or no work experience who have not participated in TYEP. Youth with an acceptable academic record of 2.0 GPA or higher, although applicants with less than 2.0 GPA may be considered. Previous TYEP participants who successfully completed their work experience. Youth from families not eligible for the ESP Summer Youth Employment Program. The following is expected behavior and is not open to negotiation: • • Youth must be alcohol-, tobacco-, and drug- (ATOD) free at event. Youth must represent the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians in the best possible manner and show good judgement at all times. Youth must possess the following attributes to represent the tribe. If you are unable to meet all six, you may write an explanation that will be considered by program staff. 1. 2.5 GPA or higher at time of the conference. 2. Be on track to graduate on time. 3. Sign an agreement to share experience with others. 4. Have one year free and clear of any trouble with the law. 5. Be available for pre and post meetings with tribal staff. 6. Be willing to help with tribal programs or events for one quarter. If any or all of the criteria is not met, youth will not be tribally sponsored for an event for two consecutive quarters in the calendar year. Youth will be asked to write an explanation of circumstances or reasons for not conforming to the agreement and present this to tribal program staff as an appeals process.
