Announcements S ile tz News Pago 13 Employed with Sflête Tribe sines 1974 Bob Tom retires Bob Tom In November of this past year, Robert "B ob" Tom, Education Specialist and Baby Elder, resigned from his position with the Siletz Tribe. At this time, the Siletz Tribal Council is extending their appreci ation to Bob for the many years he devoted to assisting the Siletz Tribe and our Tribal Members in reaching their highest goals. Bob commenced his career with the Siletz Tribe in 1974,- when: he became actively- involved in the movement to restore our Tribe to federal recognition- status. The following two years were, devoted to lobbying for passage of the Restoration Bill, in Washington D.C This determination and perse verance resulted 8 in restoration of the Siletz Tribe in 1977. Bob continued to serve our Tribe in a commendable manner, during the post- Restoration era, as a member of the governing body and as an employee of the Tribal Government. In 1977, Bob was elected to a position on the interim Tribal Council. And, in June of 1978, he served a s ' the General Manager of the Siletz Tribe. In October of 1980, Bob transferred to the Salem Area Office where he served in a supervisory capacity. Four years later, Bob accepted a position as the Education Specialist and managed the Higher Education and Adult Vocational Training Program. He overwhelmingly exceeded the expectations for this position until the day. he resigned, on Novem ber 28,1997. Fortunately, the Siletz Tribe did not exclusively benefit from Bob's expertise,'skill, and compassion for the Siletz Tribe, our Tribal Mem bers, and all Native people. A multitude of tribal, local and national organization also derived this same benefit. Those organiza tions include: ■ The State Scholarship Com mission. This Commission recently presented Bob with an award for his years of work in education. ■ The National Coalition On Indian EducatiortlTribal Education Contractor's Association. Bob served as a" member of this board and assisted with the planning and administering of the annual conference. ■ The Oregon Tribal Education Contractor's Association Board. Bob served as a member o f this board. ■ The Oregon State Financial Aid Administrators. This organiza tion recently presented Bob with an award at their conference for his work with financial aid. ■ The Art Bensell Scholarship. ■ The Sharon Butler Memorial Scholarship. ■ The Oregon Department of Education. Rachel Williams graduated from basis military training at Fort Leonard Wood at Waynesville, Missouri on Dec. 18, 1998. During the training, Rachel received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid and army history and tradition. . Rachel enlisted in the U.S, army , on October 15,1997, and chose tfie M edical,field for her specialty, i , | Prior to joining the army, Rachel spent a year at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. Rachel is currently Stationed in San Antonio, Texas, where she is undergoing advanced infantry training. Rachel is a tribaLmember arid the daughter of Jeffrey and Deborah Williams. £ a 1996 8raduate o f Philomath HighSchool. ■ The Oregon Indian Coalition On Post Secondary Education, and ■ The Oregon State System of Higher Education. . Bob's most honorable accom plishment is, however, the manner in which he assisted our Tribal Members in achieving a truly extraordinary goal - the successful pursuit of higher education. Bob devoted tireless hours to establish ing positive working relationships with higher education institutions throughout the State of Oregon. He also counseled our students during the harrowing times associated with pursuing higher education, and applauded and recognized the many achievements of our Tribal Members. For this, we thank you. Your dedication to our Tribal Members is a tribute to your character and our Tribe will experience the warmth of your generosity for many years.
