The Clackamas Print April 30, 2003 Artist: MC Paul Barman | Album: Paullelujah! Isaiah Creel The Clackamas Print MC PAUL BARMAN: PAULLELUJAH MC Paul Barman’s (MCPB) full-length album “Paullelujah!” is an eclectic mixture of sexual per version and political dissent that is sure to make you reconsider your views of what hip-hop is all about. Paul Barman is a Jewish white boy from New Jersey whose rap ping style is more conversational than flowing. “Paullelujah!” is his first full-length album, but he has made appearances on many rap albums, including a cameo on Masta Ace’s Disposable Arts (MCPB rhymed as Ace’s nerdy university roonlmate). A Brown University graduate, Barman packs his rhymes with ref erences to everything from the Iliad to Trigonometry. “I’m iller than the Iliad and show more than Shoah, while you’re so corny you’ve got to SOHCAHTOA. PEMDAS EFX, the number one skirmisher. I’m in the house like furniture” — Paul Barman, "Excuse You.” The majority of MCPB’s songs, however, are more for laughs th serious thought consumption./ of his favorite topics of conversa tion is sexuality and the various sexual encounters that occur with in the confines of his own mind. “Cock Mobster” is a ridiculous litany of various celebrity rhymes dealing with MCPB’s sexual fan tasies, containing lines such as, “I want Traci Bingham in a lacy thing-um.” Although I find some of his subject matter slightly offensive, I realize that it is purely for the shock value. The word play he uses to create even the most graphic scenes is incredible. (It would be inappropriate at this point for me to offer an example, but for those of you who are intrigued by sex talk, this album is for you.) He doesn’t limit himself to sex, though; he also tack les a number of political issues. “Bleeding Brain Grow” (sounds like “Reading Rainbow,” no?) deals with the topics of reli gion and race, using % ■ strange rhyming palindrome style that is not to be missed by the modern English major. MCPB’s corny, hip beats will keep your head nodding and Artist: The Used | Album: The Used re ideal for popping, but with producers like MikeTheMusic Guy, Phofo, MF DOOM, and Prince Paul it’s hard to make a bad sounding album. Overall, this album gets an eight out of 10 from me. It is extremely witty and thought pro voking, and the beats are out of this world, but the sexual content should be limited in its doses. If you ever get a chance to pur chase this album though, you should do so immediately! It is quite possible that Barman will one day be as big as Eminem...or Jared Eschweiler The Clackamas Print THE USED: SELF-TITLED Since their appearance on the “The Osbournes,” The Used has made a splash in the music world. The Used’s self-titled debut album is a mixture of melody and mayhem. Many of the songs are beautifully played and very enjoy able. I enjoyed their mellow songs such as “Box Full of Sharp Objects” and “Blue & Yellow.” a F War, ' H f M B MC PAUL BARMAN Many of the songs present not only a great rhythm and flow, but cause you to listen to the lyrics, which are left to your interpretation. The Used also offers a style of howling and wailing music. Although such music is not my taste, I did enjoy the wonderfully played guitar, bass and drums throughout the whole CD. The beat of the music makes you want to get up and dance (or mosh if that’s your preference). The Used is a very unique band. Its music style is both provocative and abrasive. The lead singer Bert McCracken has a wonderful singing voice, with varying tastes in how to use it. In many songs his voice is enchanting, and in others he force fully bleats out earsplitting howls. At times McCracken caused me intense eardrum damage, but has incredible talent when he channels it correctly. One of the bands strangest live show attractions is that McCracken has been known to vomit from screaming too loudly (don’t try this at home). It would be unfair not to give him respect for that! This CD offers more than one style of music, thus truly making it an alter native to most other bands. Though I disliked a few of THE USED songs, I have to say that all in all this is a good CD. I recommend it for its well- played music and many of its softer songs, but those who expect a hard core rock band don’t get “Used.” Epic Events *The weekly 5 in 5* Children’s Poetry Forum: Who: The CCC English CCC Sock H od : Who: Anyone looking to have a Department, Childcare Club and Student Government present: The First Annual Children’s Poetry Forum - Local authors will present their own poems as well as their favorites from around the world.
