DAISY BAIN A&E Editor The women’s softball team leld a girl’s softball camp for iges 8-13 that filled its roster ror the first time in the nine ^ears it has been held. Enrollment was up about 10 ’iris from the previous year, eaching the limit of 60 girls. The camps were held on Mon lay evenings, Jan. 7, 14 and 21. iach camp consisted of two lours of instruction from the Cougars in hitting, bunting, slapping, fielding and throw ing. “It was a very fun activity,” said Paul Fiskum, the women’s head coach. Each player from the team had a group to lead. Fiskum stressed the one rule he en forces at all his camps. “Each girl must personally interact with every kid in the their group. The way we measure the success of our camp is whether or not we see most of jpcoming cougar Athi the girls leaving with smiles on their faces.” Interaction with the girls helped the team members with their own skills. “Anytime you have to teach skills that you perform on in stinct really requires you to analyze what you are doing and to be able to break it down,” said Fiskum. There will be two more camps offered by the Cougars. The 10th annual softball hitting clinic for girls ages 13-18 will be on Sat. Jan. 26 and Sun. Jan. 27. The cost is $35, and in struction will be in the funda mentals of bunting, slapping and hitting. Each participant will be videotaped and have a chance to review the tape with a coach or player. The pitching and catching clinic will be held Feb. 11 and 13 from 6-8 p.m. The cost is also $35, and instruction will be given by catching and pitching coaches along with the ÇCC softball coaching staff. This clinic will be for ages- $-13. Both clinics still have openings and you can call 503-657-6958 x2461 formore information. Monies earned from the camps will help send the soft- ball team to Arizona to catch some good weather and lots of practice. This week the Cougars will be playing two games at home against Chemeketa and Linn-Benton. ELENA BORYSKA Sports Editor MO ,-7-. The Cougar women's basketball team split the two road games they played last week, dropping from second place in the Southern divi sion to third place behind league leading-Umpqua and second-place Chemeketa. The first stop on the Cougar’s road trip was Roseburg, to battle Umpqua on Wed., Jan. 16. Going into this game, both teams were undefeated in league play and pretty evenly matched. Appar ently the Cougars weren’t strong enough to take down Umpqua, as they were defeated by a score of 94-85. Kayla Steen had another great game, racking up 29 points and 10 rebounds. Jennie Kooch scored 15 points and grabbed eight boards, while Lena Grant had 14 points and Cappie Smith had 10. After this disappointing loss, the Cougars traveled to Southwest Oregon Community College, where they escaped with a double digit victory, 96-81. Stats were not avail able at press time. The Cougar’s league record after these games is now 3-1, and 15-3 overall. Next up for the Cougar women are a couple of home games to be played in the Randall Gym. Tonight, the Cougars will be hosting Chemketa at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, they will be trying to take down Linn-Benton at 6 p.m.
