The women’s softball team
leld a girl’s softball camp for
iges 8-13 that filled its roster
ror the first time in the nine
^ears it has been held.
Enrollment was up about 10
’iris from the previous year,
eaching the limit of 60 girls.
The camps were held on Mon
lay evenings, Jan. 7, 14 and 21.
iach camp consisted of two
lours of instruction from the
Cougars in hitting, bunting,
slapping, fielding and throw
ing.
“It was a very fun activity,”
said Paul Fiskum, the women’s
head coach.
Each player from the team
had a group to lead. Fiskum
stressed the one rule he en
forces at all his camps. “Each
girl must personally interact
with every kid in the their
group. The way we measure
the success of our camp is
whether or not we see most of
jpcoming cougar Athi
the girls leaving with smiles on
their faces.”
Interaction with the girls
helped the team members with
their own skills.
“Anytime you have to teach
skills that you perform on in
stinct really requires you to
analyze what you are doing and
to be able to break it down,”
said Fiskum.
There will be two more
camps offered by the Cougars.
The 10th annual softball hitting
clinic for girls ages 13-18 will
be on Sat. Jan. 26 and Sun. Jan.
27. The cost is $35, and in
struction will be in the funda
mentals of bunting, slapping
and hitting. Each participant
will be videotaped and have a
chance to review the tape with
a coach or player.
The pitching and catching
clinic will be held Feb. 11 and
13 from 6-8 p.m. The cost is
also $35, and instruction will be
given by catching and pitching
coaches along with the ÇCC
softball coaching staff. This
clinic will be for ages- $-13.
Both clinics still have openings
and you can call 503-657-6958

Monies earned from the
camps will help send the soft-
ball team to Arizona to catch
some good weather and lots of
practice.

The Cougar women's basketball
team split the two road games they
played last week, dropping from
second place in the Southern divi
sion to third place behind league
leading-Umpqua and second-place
Chemeketa.
The first stop on the Cougar’s
road trip was Roseburg, to battle
Umpqua on Wed., Jan. 16. Going
into this game, both teams were
undefeated in league play and
pretty evenly matched. Appar
ently the Cougars weren’t strong
enough to take down Umpqua, as
they were defeated by a score of
94-85. Kayla Steen had another
great game, racking up 29 points
and 10 rebounds. Jennie Kooch
scored 15 points and grabbed
eight boards, while Lena Grant had
14 points and Cappie Smith had 10.
After this disappointing loss,
the Cougars traveled to Southwest
Oregon Community College, where
they escaped with a double digit
victory, 96-81. Stats were not avail
able at press time. The Cougar’s
league record after these games is
now 3-1, and 15-3 overall. Next up
for the Cougar women are a couple
of home games to be played in the
Randall Gym. Tonight, the Cougars
will be hosting Chemketa at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, they will be trying to
take down Linn-Benton at 6 p.m.
