road system. if so much time in re­
quired to build the main roads, few
of tut will live to nee the side roads
and crow roads built.
A reasonable estimate of the number
of notes or similar certificates of in­
debtedness given by the people of
Lane county places the number at
12,000 to 15,000, or nearly one to
every three persons in the county.
This merely shows the demand of in­
dividuals for ready money to use in
their business and give them imme­
diate facilities. That is all the road
bonding plan proposes to do. If it is
good business individually for the peo­
ple of the county, it is good business
in their collective affairs. We need
and want the roads NOW.
Main Roads
Build the main r o a d s with bond mon­
ey. Do It Now! anti g<t immediate
use of them, and turn the other road
tax money over tt> the construction
of roads not on the bond program and
we will have a completed road system
in Lane county that we of the present
can use and then leave as a creditable
legacy to those who follow us.
Indebtedness
Cases have bcerf eitisl where towns
and counties have been burdened by
contracting indebtedness. Thousands
of cases can he cited where they have
reaj*ed rich returns from bonding.
There is not a progressive municipal­
ity in the Cnitcd States that has not
availed itself of the bonding privi­
leges. It would be easy to cite cases
of individuals who have been fore­
closed on loans, but that doesn’t dis­
prove that 75 per cent or more of the
successful men of the country have
been able to attain success only by
means of money borrowed to enable
them to obtain for immediate use the
facilities necessary to successful and
economical business transactions.
Material Returns
•
If the bonding proposition carries
and plans as proposed are carried out
our expenditures on the Coast Road
and on the Military Road will be
matched by the state and government
to the extent of 41,435,000, or nearly
the amount to be paid out as interest
on the full $2,000,000. In other words
our enterprise in building these roads
will be recognized by the state and
government to such an extent that
the outside money brought in and
spent here will nearly equal the
amount of our interest. Why should
