6 City News July 21 2022 Vernonia City News... Citizen of the Month – Councilor Donald Normand nominated Karen Miller for her work on behalf of the Vernonia Senior Center and postings in the Vernonia's Voice newspaper. Correction – In the July 7, 2022 issue of Vernonia's Voice we misspelled the name of Whelan Easley who was presented with the Citizen of the Month award at the June 21 City Council meeting. Vernonia's Voice sincerely regrets this error. At the July 11 Special City Council Meeting: Council Approves Jamboree Liquor Licenses – Council approved liquor licenses for the following groups/events during Jamboree weekend: the Jamboree Committee to have a distillery vendor at the Spencer Park Picnic Shelter; The American Legion for an event at their building at 627 Adams Avenue; and Buckshot Betty's for a beer garden. At the July 18, 2022 City Council Meeting: Council Hears Presentation on Thanksgiving Turkey Program – Susan Wagner, on behalf of the Vernonia Senior Center, requested the City help support a fundraiser to give away turkeys at Thanksgiving. She said the project was hoping to raise $3,500. Wagner said they had already received a $500 donation and City Recorder Stephanie Borst pledged $100 during the presentation. Mayor Appoints DeMent to Public Works Committee – With approval from the rest of the Council, Mayor Rick Hobart appointed Tom DeMent to the community Public Works Committee. Council Hears Request from E-bike Business – Council heard a request from Fishhawk eCyclery, a new local business who was seeking permission to set up a mobile e-bicycle rental and repair shop at Vernonia Lake Park. Fishhawk eCyclery has a Vernonia business license and liability insurance, would need an electrical hookup, and offers a variety of services including rentals of several different models by the hour, along with repairs. Council asked staff to bring a proposed agreement and a bid to install electricity to their August 1 meeting. Council Approves Master Fee Schedule Update – Council adopted Resolution 2022- 13, an update to the recently approved Master Fee Schedule, which now includes the new utility rates for water and sewer service: an increased base water rate of $36.95 multiplied by the meter multiplier, increased from $29.50; a decreased water loan repayment fee of $6.80 multiplied by the meter multiplier, down from $7.15; a consumption rate of $2.10 per 1,000 gallons used, up from $1.80; a decreased sewer base rate of $22.95, down from $26.90; and an increased sewer loan repayment fee of $20.60, up from $19.50. Bring back reading records to the library anytime between July 25 and August 13 to enter for prizes for each hour of reading (up to 20 hours). Program finishers receive a free book, a small prize, and tickets for our grand prize drawings. We also have a hidden picture in the library each week. Find it and enter our weekly prize drawing! Friends of the Library Jamboree Booksale @ the Cabin in Vernonia Friday, August 5, 11 am - 7 pm Saturday, August 6, 10 am - 7 pm Sunday, August 7, 9 am - 3 pm Proceeds benefit Library programs and services! In addition to a wide selection of books, audiobooks, and DVDs, there will be raffles for different prizes, $1 a ticket! Creatures Teachers Tuesday, August 16, 6:30 pm @ the Library Fostering an appreciation for all wildlife, including under-loved and misunderstood creatures like snakes and spiders. This event features new creatures for those who attended this program in summer 2021. Writing prompts, opportunity to share current work for feedback, and information on local opportunities for writers. Meetings If you haven’t seen the Library’s new display case, there is still time. We have a signed Babe Ruth baseball, and several baseball gloves representing decades, 20s-60s. The featured baseball includes 11 signatures, including Lou Gehrig. The current display will be in through July 26. Thank you to Joel Greenwell and his grandsons for lending the display.
