12 schools april21 2016 VHS Spring Sports Report Softball – The Lady Loggers continued their run through District 1 opponents and remain undefeated in league play with a 10-0 record. Overall Vernonia has a 13-1 record. The Lady Loggers are not just winning their games, they are destroying teams, defeating Delphian 22-1 and 30-0, before sweeping three games from Neah-Kah-Nie 32- 1, 11-1, 14-1. The Lady Loggers kicked off their three game series with Gaston with a 8-2 win on Tuesday, April 19. Vernonia is obviously using big bats and strong pitching to win this season, but they are also playing extremely well in the field defensively. The Lady Loggers will host Gaston for a doubleheader on Friday, April 22, scheduled to be played at the new Alumni Softball Field at the new school campus. They face Willamina at home in a non-league matchup on Tuesday, April 26, and travel to Dayton for another non-league game on Tuesday, May 3. Payton Wolf Kassidy Fetch game of their series against Neah-Kah-Nie 10-9, before rebounding to win the final two games 5-2 and 6-1. The Loggers lost to Gaston in their series opener 15-5 on Tuesday, April 19. The Loggers continue to get strong pitching from Bailey Morrison and Brett Elliot and are hitting the ball well throughout the lineup. The Loggers will complete their series against Gaston with a double header on Friday, April 22 and then start a three game series against Faith Bible with a home double header on Friday, April 29. The Loggers should be looking towards a season ending series against perennial state contenders Knappa. Knappa is currently ranked third in the state; Vernonia plays a home double header with Knappa on Friday, May 13. Track and Field – The first half of this track season has seen many great performances for the Loggers. Clay Sullivan has had an absolutely outstanding start to the season; he has the fastest time in State Baseball – The Logger 2A in the high hurdles, Bailey Morrison Boys are 8-2 in District 1 leads the Northwest play and 10-3 overall this season. Steve Burns, Devon Shay, and Jake Harbour have been impressive in several running events and give the team much needed depth. On the girls team, Justine Larue has been a real leader and competes in the long jump, the 100, 200, and 400 meters. Andrea Castano has been impressive in the 800 meters, 2nd in league with a good shot at winning the district championship, and 4x400 relay team. The team has four meets left before the District Meet May 13 and 14. “We have many outstanding athletes on our team this year and we have the ability to accomplish great things,” says head coach Byron Brown. The meeting will take place on May 5, 2016 at 6:00 PM The purpose of the meeting is to receive the budget message. This is a public meeting where deliberation of the Budget Committee will take place.
