community april21 2016 State Parks Considers Removal of Train Trestle The Oregon Parks and Rec- reation Department (OPRD) has an- nounced their intention to remove the iconic old train trestle that crosses High- way 47 south of Vernonia at the Top Hill trailhead of the Banks-Vernonia State Trail. The Banks-Vernonia State Trail runs along the 21-mile old rail bed be- tween the two towns, except for a couple short detours. One of those detours is necessary because the Tophill Trestle, nine miles south of Vernonia, has dete- riorated. Fire, age, and other damage have destroyed large sections of the tres- tle. What remains is in such poor con- dition—supports and pilings are rotten, broken, and missing—that it must be completely removed in the next one to two years to protect visitors and traffic on Highway 47. Bicyclists, equestri- ans, and pedestrians cross Highway 47 to use the Banks-Vernonia Trail. After the remains of the Tophill Trestle are re- moved, the OPRD, in co- operation with the City of Vernonia, Columbia and Washington counties, and the Oregon Department of Transporta- tion would like to come up with a set of proposals to address improvements to this crossing and are asking for the help of local citizens in developing the pro- DeWitt Finishes Boston Vernonia resident Nicole DeWitt finished the 2016 Boston Marathon on April 18 with a time of 3:41:43, a pace of 8:27 per mile. “My pace may have been slower than predicted,” said DeWitt about her run. “The heat was overwhelming for the first half! I placed way better than predicted, so it affected more than just me. I placed top 25% of women! Which was my goal! Also wound up over 4,000 places higher overall than when I started!” DeWitt finished 11,361 overall, and placed 3,437 among women and 2,443 in her age category. Congratulation on a great run Nicole! posals. A public survey is open now and just takes a few minutes to complete; go to: https:// www.surveymonkey. com/r/tophill to submit your input on the future of the trestle and the highway crossing. The survey sug- gests three options once the trestle has been re- moved: improve the highway-level crossing without adding a new crossing over the highway; build a trail crossing over the highway that looks similar to the railroad trestle; or build a more modern looking crossing.
