Boys tennis on right foot by Staci Johnson The boys’ tennis season is off on the right foot early in the season, starting with a record of 5-3. They are now holding their own throughout the season. Coach Berry Bergman states, “ I know we are in a tough league. I am happy the way we are doing so far. It’s better than expected.” The boys’ team consists of Kyle Anderson, David Cota, Tom Gates, Mike Johnson, Mike Labat, Scott Lewis, Tim Mac Donald, David Crist, Travis Eisele, Brian Tovar, John Thomas, Ted Sturdevant, Mark Stevenson, Mark Smith, Tim Roberts, Kemis Rath, Steve Mills, Garret McLeod, Dave Lar son, Brad Hershman, Derek Hille, George Grant, Scott Gaunt, and foreign exhange stu dent Chris Seelies. In the Rex Putman match number one single’s player senior Mark Stevenson played an outstanding game but fell vic tim to his opponent in the end. Along with Stevenson, Scott Lewis has also been playing good tennis this season, accor ding to Bergman. “ Kemis Rath has improved a lot since last year,” comments Bergman. The boys’ next tennis match will be tom orrow against Lakeridge, then it will be on to OC for the team. The baseball team is holding a 7-1 record losing to Rex Putnam, 4-1. by M ike Martus The West Linn varsity baseball team moved its overall record to 11-5 and its league record to 7- 1, with a 3-2 victory over cross river rival Oregon City. W L golf team hoping for par by Lisa Kendall West Linn’s golf team is off on the wrong foot so far with a league record of 1-5, but they hope to come back to par in the remainder of their season. Sophomore Larry Donahe moved his league pitching record to 2-1 with his second vic tory over OC this year. Bob Bassett, Mike Hastings, and Mark Ellis all scored runs for the Lions. “ I’m elated,” said Hastings after the OC victory. “ I feel confident for the rest of the season.” Darren McCarty and Ron Higgonbotham scored the two runs for OC. The only league loss for the Lions was to Rex Putnam Wednesday, April 13, at West Linn. The Lions were shut out 4- 0 by Putnam’s Curt Martin. The team also lost a non-league en counter to Sunset April 16, 13-1 at Sunset. “ Rex Putnam is our competition in the league,” stated senior pitcher Rob Kloer, “ but we’ll beat them next time.” In a game against Bend, Kloer set a new school record by pit ching 65 pitches in a game. The old record of least amount of pit ches in a game was held by Rod Rimby in 1978. The Lions account their suc cess to the philosophy they have. “ If the pitcher throws strikes and the batters hit the ball in play and you play catch well, you will win.” The Lions must be using their philosophy, because they are winning. Girls’ tennis is now in its se cond round, but West Linn has been having a hard time getting past Lake O sw ego and Lakeridge. “ Lake Oswego beat us twice around,” said Heidi Geldaker, head tennis coach. Geldaker says the Three Rivers League is much tougher than the old league mainly because of Lakeridge and Lake Oswego. “ We have a hard time competing when we don’t have home tennis courts,” she ex plained. She went on to say that the school board is recommending new tennis courts where the ower parking lot is, but they haven’t made a commitment. “ If the tennis courts do go in, there would be room for six,” Geldaker stated. West Linn was defeated by rival Oregon City April 11 by on ly one stroke, 160-159. The Lions also lost to league cham pions, the Lakeridge Pacers, April 13. IF YOU THINK EVERYBODY SMOKES ... The two days of the district meet are in the same week of May Day. “ Kathy Stein, who is on the court, plays first doubles, and Jane Paulson, who’s an MC, plays first singles,” Geldaker ex plained. However, next year the tennis season will start later so there shouldn’t be any problem. Geldaker said Paulson is the top contender on the team for state. “ She’s worked hard. I think she’s considered one of the better players in the state of Oregon.” Hair Unlimited West Linn lost to Gladstone with a score of 176-159. The Lions also lost a close game to Putnam scoring 181 compared to the Kingsmen’s 172 points. The Lions then came back to win against the Milwaukie Mustangs with a score of 171- 178 on April 7. Keith Kaiser shot an outstanding 34, the season low.
