Although the majority of the J V girls have yet to com pete in match com petition, five girls are occasionally being m oved up to varsity level. Currently there is pc no provision for inter-school JV girls’ tennis competition and the J V team is basically a training ground for future varsity com petitors. There is, how ever, an all league tourney for only the JV girls’ teams in the Three Rivers League. “ W e anticipate some good c o m p e titio n ,” states freshman Janice McDonald. Other possiblities for JV play in the future remains “ som ewhat fo g gy at this tim e,” adds freshman An drea Dechenne. Despite the shakey start, the girls are doing well. Their record is now 3-1, having avenged Gladstone with a 5-1 victory and beaten Silverton and Estacada with 7-5 and 4-2 wins, respectively. The girls are coached by P.E. teacher Pia Leonard w ho has coached both varsity volleyball and JV girl’s basketball for the past two years. She will be assisted by Lori Davis, a West Linn graduate and a softball pit cher for O regon State Universi ty- Denise Garcia This year’s team possess quite a bit of individual talent. Senior short stop pitcher Lisa Hall is bat ting .600 and pitcher Chris Chose has averaged 8 strike outs per gam e. Also, senior third baseperson R enee Petit is play ing what C oach L eon ard d escrib ed as “ v e ry solid defen se.” Coach Leonard conceded that it w on ’t be easy their first year. “ It will be tough. W e are in a strong league that has had soft- ball teams for many years. W e just don’t have the experience the other teams d o .” Six of the 11 teams in their league made the state play-offs last year. T h e new softball team will create problems in the already overcrow ded practice facilities, especially for W est Linn’s state c h a m p io n b aseball team . Leonard com m ented, “ It will be harder on them than it will be on us. But w e will practice outside as much as possible in order to ease things up.” Varsity baseball head coach Terry Pollreisz is not worried about the situation, “ W e are will ing to make an adjustment. W e hope that they (the girls on the new softball team) are also able to accept any inconveniences.”
