But you may not have heard o f Zanna, Don’t !,T im Acito’s equally unusual tale that asks audiences to take the red pill—or is that purple, or pink?—for a trip to a parallel universe where gay is more than okay, it’s the norm. The last in Triangle Productions!’ PDX Pride Series posits an alternate realm in which heterosexuality is taboo. Zanna is the resident matchmaker at her Midwest, straight-phobic Heartsville High School, bringing together guys and guys, girls and girls, queers and queers until— quelle scandal! —the football team’s quarterback and a girl (a girl!) fall in love. Directed by John Oules with musical direction by Darcy W hite, Zanna^ Don’t ! is a provocative, entertaining “W hat if?” that puts the “fairy” in “fairy tale.” And with nods to everything from Star Trek to Wayne Gretzky, Alex ander the Great to Leonardo da Vinci, Acito’s story straddles the line be tween high art and low culture with cheeky aplomb. It’s no wonder the author, originally inspired by that 1980 film craptas- trophe, describes Zanna, Don't! as a “loving tribute” that “represents the best and—many would argue— the worst of pop culture.” Leave the roller skates at home for this one.
