Kimya Dig It? Former Moldy Peach Dawson gets fresh again at the Wonder For some, she’s the singer-songwriter best known as one half o f the “anti folk” act Moldy Peaches. For others, she’s the versatile tunesmith who, after a decade of solo work, reinvented herself with a recent foray into children’s music (Alphabutt, anyone?). And yet, for perhaps many more, she’s The Girl Who Made Me Want to Get The Juno Soundtrack. Kimya Dawson, with her plucky, lo-fi charm, reentered the cool kids’ Zeitgeist in 2007 with tunes like “So Nice So Smart” and “Anyone Else But You,” the pitch-perfect accompaniment to the story o f Michael Cera and Ellen Page’s knocked-up nerds. And now, the touring fanatic— who on separate occasions and on different continents has been called a “road war rior” by the likes o f Frank Black and Kaia Wilson— is back in Stumptown for a performance at the Wonder Ballroom. The June 10 show pairs Dawson with Aesop Rock— aka Ian Bavitz— whose emcee M.O. is akin to Del tha Funkce Homosapien, Atmosphere and El-P (who helped produce his second full-length release, the socially- minded Labor Days, on the latter’s seminal D ef Jux label). W ith singles “Coma,” “Boombox” and other conceptual soundscapes, the artist and pro ducer helmed the underground/alt hip-hop movement of the Y2K era. Like Dawson, Rock is of the collaborative mindset (he’s also a member of The Weathermen and Hail Mary Mallon), in what should make for an organic, engaging night of indie royalty.
