(9:30 pm-1:30 am. 2032 SW Fifth Ave.) Exotic Electro Elixir Queer knowledge test: Do you know what “G-emo is?” I didn’t either until I met “gay emo” musician Logan Lynn. The sassy electro fag is putting Portland on the musical map in an entirely new way, coining his queer-oriented genre for the heartbroken. Apparently, the sadness of his audience makes Lynn a happy man. “I really want to he the Liz Phair of my generation,” he says. “I don’t want to be a rock star, but just have some really big hits on soundtracks.” Since debuting his first album at the Folsom Street Fair to 400,000 leather dad dies, Lynn has found his niche with an entirely different audience—that of the straight commu nity. With his quirky, sex-drenched musical style filled with catchy beats, he appeals to frat boys and sexually androgynous hipsters. Crediting bands like the Postal Service for “paving the way” for artists like him, Lynn is tak ing every inch he’s given to push the sexy extremes of his exotic electro elixir. With the video for his single “Burning Your Glory” reaching No. 7 on MTV’s Logo network and his newest album release, From Pillar to Post, coming out in the fall, there is no stopping this man-meets-machine. “At first my music was too dancy for the emo kids and too folky for the electro kids...things seem to be happening really organically now,” Lynn says. “The music may be quirky, but it’s still digestible.” Lynn and bandmate Carlos Cortez are ready to play for, and with, the G-emos of Portland during MusicFest NW 8 p.m. Sept. 8 at Holocene, 1001 S.E. Morrison St. While rocking the sweaty room, Lynn will surely teach you a thing or two. Lynn is also booked to perform at Cascade AIDS Project’s 21st annual AIDS Walk Portland, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to nwn Oct. 14 at Pioneer Courthouse Square. There’s also a bit of cross-dressing, just to keep things nteresting. Give it to Kenneth Branagh to take the play’s slightness as a challenge and take a “high concept” direction—in this case, setting the movie in late 19th century Japan, among a vaguely described group of British merchants settled there, assimilating to their new culture. As if that weren’t enough, in another of his directorial curveballs, Branagh presents a defiantly, but not illogically, interracial cast. While not his torically impossible, this choice places the movie firmly into theatrical, rom-com unreality. The roles of Oliver and Orlando, quarrelling brothers, are played by the superb Adrian Lester and David Oyelowo, two British actors relatively unknown to American audiences. Oyelowo in particular brings a mixture of sentiment and strength to Orlando, but he never seems to have a genuine romantic connection to Bryce Dallas Howard’s Rosalind. He looks convincingly in love, but not with the person in front of him, whether she is dressed as a boy or a girl. Little attempt is made to masculinize the delicate Ms. Howard, but she’s cute and spunky enough in her trousered and dirty-faced Ganymede persona that when the shepherdess Phoebe (Jade Jeffries) develops a swift crush on her, it makes a certain kind of sense. Orlando’s lack of connection with Rosalind, though, is a mat ter of chemistry, and Oyelowo and Howard don’t have it. In general, though, the film is free of genuine sexual tension, a common side effect of the Branagh approach. Branagh loves the language, energy, romance and fun of Shakespeare, but he doesn’t seem to capture its lu. t, preferring to have the lovestruck characters gaze stupidly at each other. The best performances aren’t the young lovers, but the grown ups, played flawlessly by Brian Blessed, Alfred Molina and Kevin Kline.
