FourScore Presents Vocal Chamber Music on Speed Picture the program that the usher hands out at a classical music concert: an ordered list of music to he performed, artist biographies, a little about the performing group’s background. You are not likely to get that kind of program at either of this month’s performances by FourScore, Portland’s new “classical manband.” That’s because the members of the vocal/instrumental quartet want to put your precon ceptions about classical chamber music in a blender and push the “puree” button—would you expect anything less from a group that self-identifies as “vocal chamber music on speed”? The program for FourScore’s debut performance, Elegies and Other Sad Songs, was still fluid at the time of this writing; member Stephen Marc Beaudoin couldn’t yet say whether the show would feature 10 songs or 30. He did confirm that FourScore is singing tunes by contemporary songwriter Rufus Wainwright as well as songs by the 17th century composer William Byrd. “We try to show in the programming that there’s tremendous connectivity between some thing written in the 17th century and something written in the 21st century,” explains Beaudoin, a gay member of the quartet. Beaudoin, 27, hopes that this crossover program will appeal to a wide variety of music lovers: “We want the very astute, knowledgeable, old-school classical music fan to come just as much as we want the 22-year-old indie rocker fan to come.” Stephen Marc Beaudoin (left) hopes The group members themselves have diverse, solid musical backgrounds. Francis is the former lead singer of a heavy metal band and a member of the Trinity Choir and Consort. Ben Kinkley, who sings with Portland’s First Presbyterian Church, loves barbershop music. Beaudoin, who moved from Boston to Portland one year ago, has worn many hats since he got here, including freelance musician, vocal direc tor for Hand2Mouth Theatre and classical music critic for Willamette Week. It’s his impression that Portland’s fine arts scene is at a crossroads, for a number of reasons. “It’s a great time to be a creative person here,” he says. FourScore debuts 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 in the choir room of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 147 N .W. 19th Ave., and performs again 9 p.m. Aug. 25 at The Old Church, 1422 S.W. 11th Ave. Tickets are $10 from 503-753-4580.
