White Bird Dance will lure you out of the house on three gloomy February weeknights to witness a trio of renowned dance com panies hailing from Great Britain, Spain and Brazil. “It will be a very colorful month with different kinds of movement and music,” says Walter Jaffe, who co-founded White Bird with his life partner, Paul King. Portland’s de facto international dance month starts with Richard Alston Dance Company. Though critics have called him Britain’s best dance maker, he is not yet a well-known name in the United States. The 12-year-old dance company didn’t even perform in the United States until 2004- So audiences should count themselves lucky that White Bird is keeping ahead of the curve by debuting, Alston’s lyri cal, accessible and visually beautiful work in Portland. One week later, Nuevo Ballet Español heats up the stage, led by flamenco superstars Ángel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, who act as artistic directors, choreographers and principal dancers. The charis matic young bailoores aim to bring flamenco into the 21st century with a combination of classic tech eating eating eating eating nique and cutting-edge style. Jaffe, who saw the company perform in Spain several years ago, describes their movements as fast, agile and amazing. The month wraps up with Grupo Corpo, the most popular international company White Bird has ever brought to Portland. Colorful, sexy and inherently Brazilian, the choreography of Grupo Corpo’s Rodrigo Pedemeiras mixes strains of samba, ballet, capoeira and modem dance. This performance marks the third time Grupo Corpo has graced White Bird’s program, a return rate it shares with only a few other influential companies such as Mark Morris Dance Group, Paul Taylor Dance Company and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This time Grupo Corpo shares two new works: “Onqotó,” set to a score by two famous Brazilian composers, and “Lecuona,” to the music of Ernesto Lecuona (aka “The Cuban Gershwin”). Richard Alston Dance Company performs at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1, Nuevo Ballet Español at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 8, and Grupo Corpo at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28. All shows take place at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, 1037 S.W. Broadway.
