The marshall receives pay $60 per month—and must be on duty sixteen hours each day, including Sunday. There will be considerable work for the new board to consider. About the first thing that should be brought He fore the board will be to collect th* charter amendments and put them in pamphlet form, There are several amendments and possibly with the amendments the city would have a good charter We have been informed by an able attorney that no ordinance passed by the board since 1900 is legal. It ap pears that the legislature of 19)1 pass ed an amendment to the charter which has not been lived up to. There has been no amendment since that time. Two Kinds of Citizens “We apologize for all mistakes made in former issues and say they were inexcusable, as all an editor has to do is to hunt news and clean the rollers and set type, sweep the floor and pen Bhort items, and fold papers, and write wrappers, and make the paste, and mail the papers, and talk to visit ors, and distribute type and carry water, and saw wood and read the proofs, hunt the shears to write edito rials, and dodge the bills, and dun de linquents, and take cussings from the whole force, and tell our subscribers that we mnst have money —we say that we’ve no business to make mis takes while attending to those little matters, and getting our living on hopper-tail soup flavored with imagina tion, and wearing old shoes and no collar and a patch on our pants, and obliged to turn a smiling countenance to the man who tells us our paper ain't worth a dollar anyhow, and that he eou.d make a better one with his eyes shut.” A dearth of local news often leads tj murmurs on the part of those who prize local gossip above all else, and it is not the fault of the publisher. Any live publisher will not fail to give all the local news worthy of note, therefore when the local department is short you should not rail ut the editor, but remember you might have committed suicide, got married, quar relled with your neighbor, stole chick ens, let your team run away, or done a hundred other things to make a local item. If a newspaper should publish cur rent street gossip, or the hints and al lusions of the best society in the com munity it would be ostracized and the poor editor horsewhipped or burned at the stake. Think a minute of the mean and low things you say about your townsmen and your near neigh bor and imagine how it would look in print. Don’t criticise the newspapers for what they print, but give them great credit for what they don’t print. A newspaper that contains one-half the nonsense current among the best citizens, would bo considered unfit to read. Honest! Patriotism manifests in many and various ways. Some people are will- ing to die for their country and a few are willing to live for their c< untry wnich is much harder. Some are eag er to show their patriotism by hold ing n job at a fat salary and some are willing to vote the party ticket straight-just because it is the party AT A BARGAIN ticket.
