A New Grape. VACCINATION An entirely new kind of grape is being developed at the Government experi station near Lodi, Cal., and pro VS. SPRAYING mental fessor H. C. Husmann is of the opinion A New System for Destroying Fruit Tree Pests Discovered by Grants Pass Man. W. S. Barrie owns property at the head of Sixth street, just within the city corporation. He had about 1000 trees, which were very scaly last year, tho they had been sprayed the previous winter with lime, sulphur and salt solu tion, says the Grants Pass Observer. Last fall, when a fruit inspector was appointed and compulsory spraying an nounced, Mr. Barrie cut out two thirds of his trees, leaving 300. These were badly affected witn scale. He proceed ed to vaccinate 25 of these trees with sulphur, bluestone, and a little lime. The rest he sprayed with sulphur and lime mixture. Today he brought to the Observer two small apple branches. One was taken from a vaccinated tree, and the other from a sprayed tree, the two trees standing about two rods apart. The vaccinated branch is smooth, clean and shows vigorous growth. The sprayed branch shows scale and has not the clean and healthy appearance of the other. Mr. B i. l ie examined the vacci nation holes and found that the ingred ients had disappeared from the front part near the bark, but that there was some still left near the heart of the tree. This test seems to be very strongly in favor of vaccination. We would like to hear fro n others who have experi mented. it is very important to the fruit industry that vaccination be either proved or disproved. /I New Ruling. The following is a copy of a letter received by the Roseburg land office officials from the commissioner of the general land office at Washington: You are directed to at once inform all newspapers in your respective districts as a matter of news, that in all cases where homestead entries are made after November 1, 1907, commutation proofs must show actual continuous bona fide residence for the full period of fourteen months. In all cases where the entries were made before November 1, 1907, the rule heretofore existing that six months constructive residence following the date of entry will be considered as a part of the required fourteen months residence, will remain in force. Of course I get up before six but I go out at 6 a. m. and carry two grips loaded with bricks around because the boss wants me to get fat so my clothes will hang better and look better. I see that the Chinese ladies and the royal Japanese ladies, too, all made a fuss over Sec’y Taft the other day, because he is so nice and plump. Tnat is a re commend for any man over there, but I think the way a fellow’s under duds fit him has a good deal to do with the hang and fit of his outer duds. I know it makes a lot of difference if your shirt don’t fit you. But, say, if you want a fine shape, you come here and let us help you pick out your underwear and shirts and sox and everything like that. Why, it's no trick to make you look like a professor of physical culture and Sec. Taft rolled into one. Butt in W illie , At The Toggery, Medford. Editor Jacksonville Post: I write to let you know that we are yet in God's fav ored part < f Jackson county and to let the valley portion know that in time the Butte creek country will be no small portion of the county. Mr. Ben Freedenburg. living three miles east of this city, brought into this office three potatoes of the White Star variety that weighed six lbs. and 12 oz., and in one hill he had 15 lbs. of good solid pota toes. The past summer we had as large and tine blackberries and goose berries as any cultivated ones 1 ever saw in any part of Rogue river valley. We certainly have better soil than the most of the valley and in time will put the rest of the county in the shade for fruit and vegetables. The saw mill at this place will start sawing the last of this week. Your valuable paper comes regularly and is like a visit from an old neighbor. Will close for this time iest I worrv vou. MOTHERS — that it will result in a grape that will excel the famous Flame Tokay, which has given Lodi so much fame. The new variety is somewhat similar to the Tokay in texture and color, but is impervious to rain, is much firmer and can be ship ped longer distances without damage. It appears to be a cross between a Tokay and Fererra and is of an improv ed flavor. If properly developed it is expected to become a most profitable variety. J. Nuuan CAPITAL STOCK $25,00b Jay C.
