One of the st public-spirited gifts ever made lo the government lias come from Wil liam Kent of Chicago, who has just deeded to the L'nited States 2!." acres of primeval redwood forest on the southern s)oe of Mt. Tnmulpais, about six miles, from the city of San Fran cisco. The land was deeded to the gov ernment with the approval of Forester ft if ford Pinchot, chief of the l'nited States forest service. The papers have now gone to the secretary of the in terior and a proclamation declaring the canyon a national monument will be signed at an early date. Saving Giant Trees. This means that more of California's redwood giants will b- saved for the scientific studv and pleasure of the whole country, in fact the wh-de world. for the great serpioias are only found in the gold) n state. I Ins grove given to the government by Mr. Kent is one of the oiilv tracts of redwood forests tn be f-.uud in its natural state in Cali fornia today. The laud is said to have cost Mr, Kent $47,000 some years ago, but its stand of redwood timber alone it now valued at more than l.'.o.noo on t he market. The canyons of Taiuaipais which d rn in into San Francisco Mav were rut ceau years ago, and the redwood ob tained from them went into- the coir st ruction of the od Sail Francisco. The giants on the tract to be known as Muir Woods escaped the ax, however, chiefly because the outlet is on the ocean side instead of the bay side, and also because the various owners id' the land have for sentimental reasons jeal ously guarded the timber from harm or destruction, Modern methods of log ging won I'l make short work of t he limber and would, beside, put a hand some profit in the hands of the own ers. Name It Muir Woods. It is the intention to name the na tional monument "Muir Woods," af ter doh n Muir, tin; noted naturalist. The gianrs of Redwood canyon will now be given permanent protection by vir tue of the act of June S. 1 !'Mi. which provides that objects of scientific in terest may be dee la red nut ion a I liionu nients if such action i deemed neces sary for their preservation and protcc- ' tiou. This 'J'.io acre tract will be a pleasure ground as well as n pi are for scientific study for the people practi cally of the whole of California, for within a radius of 52 miles of the can yon two-thirds of the population of the entire state are centered. MILLER AND MOORE SEEK SEATTLE'S MAYORALTY SKATTLE, Wash., Feb. Indica Hons pointed by the early returns are borne out by the final count, and John F. Miller will be the Republican candi date for mayor at the general election to be held March 3. Opposed to him will be the present incumbent, Mayor W. II. Moore, nominated on the Seattle party ticket at the primaries without opKsition, and General J. B. Metcalfe, practically unanimously nominated on the Democratic ticket.
