Charley Thomas and family have gone to the mountains for berries and have employed Mrs. George W. Haley, Sr., to attend to the culinary department of their hotel while gone. A. B. Hamlinton came out last Sunday on his wheel to make ar rangements to run a steam wood aw that Earnest Peacney bought from Claod Warmsley. and to look after other business. Harry Spencer and Mr. Rd one out laat Saturday night, reaching the Sunnyside about midnight, from the unsurveyed, and Sunday went -m tbelr way to Medford, where they are enggaed to work In tbe fruit bus iness. The Crater Lake Lumber Bex company commenced to load the lumber on the cars that la lying alongside tbe track ot tbe P. & B., but they find it hard to get bands tj do tbe work, as everybody Is busy out here. Last Monday, Rev. Mr. Golden, pastor of tbe M. E. C. 8. of Medford, came out, accompanied by Mr 1111 dreh ot Ashland, on the P. ft E. car and went 'to Butte Palls the same day, A. C. Howlett taking them In his hack. Sam Bruce, wbo Is in tbe employ ot tbe Southern Pacific as a timber cruiser, came here last Friday and procured a saddle horse and went to his claim on the unsurveyed, return ing on Sunday evening, taking the train for Medford Monday morning. George 'W. Daley and family and Bert Peacney and sister. Miss Bertha Peachey, arrived from their outing on tbe headwaters of tbe Umpqua river, last Saturday evening, but I have not learned the result of their trip only that they had a very pleas ant time. Mrs. Miller and son and daughter Miss Frances, called for dinner last Sunday, on their way to Butte Falls, Mr. Harris' many friends here are Pleased to see that he la regaining his normal condition so fast. They came as far as Eagle Point In his au tomobile and from here went In a carriage. He seems to think that he will be able to go out on a hunting expedition in the course of the next two weeks. Last Saturday Mrs. K. Meule, her daughter. Miss Blanch, and Mrs. T. J. Williams were pleasant callers at the Sunnyside. where they took (Hu rler, after which they took the Kagt-j Point and Trull stage for Trail, where they were met by friends, who look them to the hatchery, where they expect to spend some time fish ing and rusticating. While they were here shey visited our celebrated sul phur springs and were very favor ably Impressed with the beverage. TAIII.K IttM'K, IX Y XI Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Byruin were In Central Point Sunday. Mrs. F. A. Green has been on the sick list for several days. Much sickness prevailing amoug the children the past week. T. Y. Chan'blee's family have been victims of tbe 'chills." The Nealon family expect to go on a camping trip to Crater Lake. Miss Annie Hitzler spent Tuesday in Central Point visiting her parents. W. E. Hitzler has been eon- fined to tbe house with carbuncles. S. K. Adams was in Central Point and Medford Monday with a load ot farm produce. Mr. Josephine Poe, ot Medford, la visiting Mrs. B. A. Blssell. They were gli'licod friends In Ohio. The families of S. Conley and C. Pankey returned Sunday evening from a two weeks camping trip. E. H. Davis and family left Mon day morning on a camping tour to the Willamette valley in view of se lecting a place to locate. Misses Mae and Rose Nealon are at home for a much needed rest from school work. They attended Teacher's examination at Jackson ville laat week. An auto party consisting of C H. Lewis and family, of Medford, Rob ert Lewis and family, of Portland, Holbrook Witblngton, ot Medford, spent Sunday on the banks of Rogue river with Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Wash burn. THE DEAD INDIAN COVNTRV. There are 40 people In our camp. "Stub" Wakefield hasn't shot any thing but chipmunks. I. R. Robison has shot a five-point buck and W. R. Coleman a two pointer. All yours truly has succeeded in landing on are huckleberries and a cracking good time. . We have had frosts two mornings and one day It thundered end the next day It didn't rain. W. R. Coleman, J. R. Robison and Dr. Hargrave took an eight-mile hunt a couple of days ago. The doc tor got himself lost In the tall tim ber and his companions spent the day finding him and bringing bim into camp. We are having all kinds of a good time In the Dead Indian country. We are stopping at the Furry boys' ranch on Lost Prairie, and the boys are very obliging, supplying us with fresh milk from their dairy herd and with pasture knee high for our horses. ELMER O. Wolter's store In Talent, was seen on the streets ot Talent Sunday evening by your correspondent. Mr. and Mrs. C. Carey spent Sun day in Ashland, tbe guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Rease. Farmers In this part are cutting tbe third crop of alfalfa, which Is much lighter than It usually Is. Mr. and Mrs. C. Carey retunred last Tuesday from a ten days' out ing at Newport, having had a very pleasant time. Dolt Houston and party returned last Wednesday from Pelican Bay and Crater Lake, having been gone over two weeks. Mrs. Jessie Bell, niece of Mrs. J. Rose, who has been visiting here for some time, returned to Portland laat Saturday evening. Mrs. George McClaln Is at the san itarium at Ashland, undergoing med ical treatment. Mrs. McClaln nus been In poor health for some time The trustees of District No. 4 have been having some trouble regarding the bonds as gotten up for tbe build ing of the new schoolhouse in Phoe nix. A dispatch .from Klamath Falls says: The Klamath chamber of commerce had for its guests over Sunday ten ' rugged-looking youug men, .wearing khaki clothing and high - boots, together with beards of several days' growth. Tbe apparent backwoodsmen were tbe representa tives of the Portland Y. M. C. A. wbo are on a "hike" through the Klam ath country. They visited ' Crater Lake and walked to the Klamath Agency boat landing on the upper lake, where they were met by tbe steamer Wlnema and brought to this city to be entertained over night by tbe commercial body. They will return to Odessa, an up per lake resort, by boat, and from there will hike across the hills to Ashland. They no longer consider the ordinary mountains of this re gion anything more than mere hills and frequently before breakfast walk miles In order to get up an appetite. Poilier of this city called at the courthouse yesterday and gave his consent to the marriage of his twin daughters, who are but 16 years of age. All things considered, this double. marriage will be about the youngest marriage in tbe county. The husbands-to-be of these youthful twins are also young. They each had to have the consent of their lathers be fore they could obtain the necessary marriage licenses. . Miss Celestlne Polrier will become tbe wife of Horace J. A special to the Dally News from Ox ford, Miss.7 says that John Goolsby, a prominent farmer, residing near that place, while In a fit of anger, knocked his wife down with a heavy scantling, poured coal oil over her prostrate body and then set fire to her clothing. She was rescued by neighbors, who extinguished the flames, but she is In a critical con dition. Goolsby has been placed In Jail at Oxford. ADDITION V.O TIPS. Duke, the millionaire tobacco manu facturer, was found guilty of de frauding the Great Northern hotel by passing a worthless check. Layton, a rancher living near Ver non was today ahot and kliVd by John Anderson, a neighbor. The men became Involved In a dispute over an Irrigation ditch which Lay ton and his partner were digging across Anderson's property. As a reseit Anderson got his rlfla and ktrcd Layton Instantly. "We believe the election of Mr. Taft would tend to hasten the res toration of prosperous business con ditions. We believe that nls admin istration will be prudent. John Truss, colored, who killed Mrs. Min nie Green here last night by cut ting her throat, was caught today nine miles from Delaware with a ter rible gash In his neck. In mates of the Perry county Jail are being overfed and are actually com plaining about It. This unusual state of affairs waa discovered by Brom ley Wharton, general agent for tbe state board of charities, who Inspect ed the new Bloomfield institution this week. Wharton bad beard some com plaints about the food, but aupposed It was the usual one of not enough to eat. Then when be assembled the prisoners be heard this from tbe spokesman: "Mister, we're being overfed. GOULD MI KT ANSWKR NEW YORK. Aug. 18. On the application of counsel, Mrs. Helen Kelly Gould has procured In the su preme court an order directing her husband, Prank J. Gould, to rile within 24 hours his answor to her suit for divorce. Counsel for Mr Gould stated that an answer had bfen made to the complaint, but this was denied by Mrs. Gould's counsel. The complaint filed alleges mis conduct on the part of Mr. tlould on July 2.ri, 1905, while he was at North Sydney, Cape Breton, cruising on the yacht llelentta. Af ter about a minute and a half of fighting. In the second round tonight Stanley Ketchell of Grand Rapids, Mich., put out Joe Thomas of r.hl city with a shower of punches to the Jaw and the body. Thomas had no change whatever. He merely wn a chopping block for Ketchell, while the latter left the ring without a scratch on him.
