Armour is to be made oresident of the Pure Food Association., When Cervera has served his term in SDain'e dungeon the best thing he can do will be to come to the United States and live among his friends. The palmist who hss discovered that Gen. Miles will become presi dent some day is not the one who figured Grover Cleveland to be a three-time winner. - The attaches of a Methodist mis lion school in China lately picked fifty living girl babies out of a river into whioh their parents had thrown them. They have girls, not to burn, bnt to drown, in China. In the closing months of Cleve land's secoud administration the balance of trade in tavor of the United States averaged less than 97,000,000 a month. The present Average is over $54,000,000 a month. Foreign trade and a republican tariff get along together handsomely. Vreka Journal. Europe, new enterprises are being organized every day,' which gtv employment to the people and din tribute throughout the oountry emir inous sums of monoy. The element at the hnsis of it all Is tho pros perity of tho farmers. Why, out in Nobrnska, where four years ago they oouldu't borrow money from their banks on any terms, they are Hooding tbo banks with deposits. It is so everywhere. ThiB prosper!' ty is solid. There's no doubt of that and conditions are suoh that it ought to last. The balance of trade is in our favor fur the first time in years, and tt ought to continue so." Alger was hissed, at Boston, and this fact has been subject matter lot newspapers for several weeks past, but there were undisputed grounds for the biases. While requires a great deal to make the Hubites forget their manners, the ignoring of baked beans as army ra tions is no Blight provocation hence we say the hisses were provoked. -Young Senator elect Bever & doe, of Indiana, has several of the qualifications which may some time make him a president. He began hit career by driving a log team His name would also place him in .standing with his Southern col leagues especially those from the Slue Grass state. It is a reminder of the Southern senators' happiest 3 reams. A telegram from Princeton, N. J says Mr. Cleveland will be a candidate for the democratic nomi nation in 19C0. Is it possible that - the eminent gentleman is so thor oughly convinced of his mission as savior Of the nation and of the peo ple's recognition of him aB such that he thinks they will break away from their old established third- term rule? It is almost certain, if that is the case, that he overesti mates the general fear of danger. Says Representative Cannon: "If the speeches made here recently by Mr. Simpson (Jerry) and others Jutd been in Manila, they would iave been arrested, tried by drum head court martial and shot. The United States has and will continue to xercise sovereignty in the Phil ippines. If they are obstructed, the power o? the whole people, as rep resented by the army and navy, will see to it that our authority is maintained, and the rocks and mountains will fall upon any indi viduals or any arty which seeks Jo obstruct us." ' Senator Depew of New York said recently: "This is the most prosperous period this country ' had seen since 1888." People have money and they are using It. Money is cheap cheaper than in London and with a big balance of trade in .sur favor, our gold pouring in from Editors as a olass are not moueyed men but they have a fan ulty of saying a great many things that the people hear of through their mediums of circulation. There will be a great number of them at Portland in July next at whioh time and place their National Edi tors Association will be in session, They will be there from all parts of the United States. We people down this way want them to see Southern Oregon we want them to see it hard so hard that its memory will always be a treasure to them. They will each and every one be saying either naughty or pretty things about the different coast, localities they visit when they shall have gathered themselves severally uu- derneath their home roof-tree. We want them to say good of our country and our people we cannot afford to have them say ought else, Let every resident of the. Rogue river valley put at least one shoulder to the wheel and assist in accomplishing the end which will bring this train load of intellect to our valley. Money I Money Our Country Needs. Thousands ot ilollars are sent away from Southern Oregon each year for plants of different desoriotiun to en rich eastern florists and build up east ern cities, while those same plants can, and are now being propagated right hero at home. I have dabbled with plants and flowers to a limited extent without any knowledge of the business yet it has convinced me that a success ful business can be built up among us and that the money heretofore sent away can be kept here for home circu lation and thousands of dollars can be drawn from other places, and thus build up one home industry which mav be the forerunner of other industries. To back up my faith I have employed an experienced propagator for two years which I think will prove my claim. I trust that people will see that it is to their Interest to encourage us in our business not from charity, but from self interest,s we propose to give them better plants for the same amount of money. Besides this, the plants will be healthy and fresh and can be planted with a ball of earth around the roots and save nearly a year of growth. Space will not permit a description of plants and prices, but we invite every one to come and see. We guarantee that plants and prices will be right. Roses will be our Bpeoialty. The subject of Improvement of school grounds should receive more attention In several places In the county. It is not necessary in many cases to exuond money to do it. Several school grounds In the county have been nolioea which oould be made much more attractive by clearing out brush, piling rocks to one side and removing other unsightly objects. A number of places are shaded by trees which are being rapidly killed iy mistletoe, f asten a sharp two-inch nisei to the end of a long pole and re move it or let an active boy climb the trees. Save the trees around the school houses. Teachers can interest' pupils in clearing tbe grounds. In some places patrons could make a bee and spend a half a day improving the grounds.
