Aguinaldo 18 said to be a great lover of muirio. He draws the line, however, at an American quickstep. Some idta of the educational in fluence of the British museum can be gathered from the fact that over 1,000,000 persons visited it the last year. Admiral Dewey has a number of autograph letters from Aguinaldo, in which the Admiral is referred to as "my honorable and illustrious friend." The richest gold mine in the world is in Victoria, Australia, un der the thriving town of Ballarat, and in thirty years has yielded 150,000,000. A number of stockmen in Mon tana have this winter shipped in corn from Iowa to feed sheep which they are fattening for market. The corn is used to supplement alfalfa hay. The monthly statement of the collections of internal revenue show that the total receipts for January, 1899, were $20,812,212 a gain compared with the same month in 1898 of 8,476,285. Capt. John Surrat, whose mother was hanged for the murder of Presi dent Lincoln, is a trusted employe of a Baltimore steamship line, though still out on $25,000 bail as the result of a jury's disagreement in his own trial, which lasted 104 days in 1867. . General Wheeler and ' General Henry -V. Boynton. are so much alike that even mutual friends some times mistake them. When both were at a recent reception it was necessary for them to run a sort of clearing-house of messages one had received for the other. Tbat plants when injured suffer from fever is a new discovery by a British botanist. Plants suffer in a similar manner to animals under like conditions. The rate of respi ration increases and the tempera ture rise, reaching maximum with in twenty-four hours. ' , The Japanese government is about to raise its postal rates and also telegraph oharges and railroad fares, in order to raise more money to carry on the government. There has been considerable objection to the proposed increase, but thin is the most feasible way to increase their revenue. ; A great traveler declares that Chinamen make the most obedient, industrious and trustworthy of sail ers, judging by his experience on Oriental vessels. Many -of. them have at some time belonged to the orewB of pirate shipB, on whioh dis cipline ia especially strict, y . ) : The pearl that Cleopatra drank to Anthony's health was valued at $400,000, which amount, says an exchange, went down atone mouth' ful: That is a pretty high priced mixed drink, but lota of men take theirs straight, and drink up on the installment plan more than the Enchantress of the Nile In the long run, for they haven't the money - to burn that the Egyptian madam had. The old Dismal Swamp canal, whioh oonnects Chesapeake bay with Albemarle sound, will be re opened for navigation in a few weeks. It extends from Deep Creek, Va., to South Mills, N. C, a distance of 2!i miles. ' It is believed that the canal will form one of the most important links in the ohain of inland water ways extending along the coast from Mew York to Florida. Texana recently shipped their firBt cargo of oo'ton for the Japanese markets. It consisted of 13,832 bales, and was loaded on the Jap NO. 10. anese steamer Tamba Maru. She is said to have been the first vessel ever loaded at a gulf port for Japan, and will go by way of the Suez Canal to Kobe, Yokahama and Nagaski. Englishmen command the vessel, but her crew is made up entirely 'of Japanese. A letter from Dawson City, Alaska, says: The first installment of the United States relief expedi tion reindeer arrived here January 6'in charge of the Laplsnd herders. The last day's run was 60 miles. Large numbers of the reindeer are said to have been slaughtered by Indians, who mistook them for wild game. The remnant will be driven to Circle City. The business outlook for Dawson City, Alaska, during the year is most unpromising. Hundreds of people are migrating to more con genial climes, and the retail traders complain that they have more out fits offered for sale than purchases sought. Even the saloons and gambling houses are reported to be making no profits.. No new gold discoveries of importance are re ported. The Indiana Farmer reports a temperature of 20 degrees below zero at Indianapolis. Never before since the signal service office was opened in that city 28 years ago "has there been so long a cold spell. As to the effects of the freeze it says: ''Of course the peaches are all killed; probably the cherries and some of the plums. The three or four inches of snow protected the strawberries and the wheat will come out all right." The custom house figures at Honolulu for the year 1898 show a large increase both of imports and exports. The total value of the ex ports was $17,346,744, as against $16,021,775 for 1897. The value of the imports, including specie, was $11,650,890, as against $7,682,628 in 1897, an increase of $3,968,262. Half of thiB increase in imports was from- the United Statea. The in crease in imports from Great Britain and Germany come next in amount, those from Great Britain being $421,945, and from Germany $159,- 111.. The new one-dollar certificates of 1899 issue are printed from new designs. The distinguishing fea ture of the face of the notes is a spread eagle with the United States flag in its talons and the Capitol in the distance. Small portraits ot Grant and Washington, surrounded by laurel wreaths, are on the lower line of the face, and one large numeral and the Beal are printed in blue. The numerals are very large. There is more uncovered white paper showing than on any other note hitherto printed. The back of the certificate is printed iu green. . The bark was loosened on a large number of trees in the Willamette valley by the February freeze. In some oases the bark is entirely loose, which will kill the trees. There are "a great number of trees on which the bark was only partially loosened. With these trees it 1b essential that they have the most favorable circumstances possible during the coining season. . If the fruit buds have been killed on snob trees it is just as well. In any case a tree which has been seriously injured should not be allowed .to develop a crop of fruit this year.
