La Grande, Ore., Tuet., Nov. 3, 1959 Page 6 'Paradise Adventure' Picks Up After Opening Bad Start By FRED DANZIG UPI Staff Wri'er NEW YORK U l'Ii What Ka ronii with ABC-TV hour-long series, Adventure In Partdise? The show took a severe thrash ing when it debuted. Even the ad axencymen and film executives who helped put it together voiced libtress over the show. They vowed to work harder tn im.rou it. Gardner McKay, tne star or the show, bcgai taking lessons on how to act. 1 was assure! last cek that the show had improved so much that 1 might be pleas antly aurpnsed if I took anothei .ook. What's this stuff about double jeopardy1? Monday night's story was straight cut of those I'ct:r Lorre movies. His early ones. I'aulette 'Joddard was on deck as a worn an living it up on Noumea wno didn't want her daughter to learn about her dreadful past. "I'm going to be very sure my past doesn't ruin her future," is how she pui it.) Puulctto was threat ened by a killer-blackmailer, played well enough by Simon Oakland. It all came out okay. however, after one of tiiose pat ented ABC-TV warehouse brawls. Still absent from the show are paradise-like scenes of the South Pacific. Most of Monday night's action took place al night, or in side hcuses or cafes or that bloomin' warehouse. And as for adventure it was sadly out dated. However, McKay's acting has improved. He's only a mono tone 98 per cent of the time now. But his eyelashes still flutter be fore he speaks. I think this little preliminary helps rev up his voice. Scmeone once said that be cause of TV new performers no longer have any place in which to be bad. Nonsense. There is a place for new talent to be bad. Ironically, it's TV. And Adventure In Paradise is the best example I've seen. Pal Harrington Jr., a perform er who is resurrecting dialect comedy on TV. joined the perma nent Danny Thomas show com pany Monday niht on CBS-TV. He plays the part of a young night club comedian who special izes in being an Italian golf pro named Guido Panzini which is the role he made famous on Jack Paar's show. Harrington's short comings as a straight actor were plainly evident, but in his less emotional scenes with Thomas, he showed promise of becoming an asset to Ihe show. If Danny and Pat can leave the women at home and move into a night club environment, perhaps Ihe jaded lock of the show will vanish. Th Channel Swim: Recording artists who will receive "Gram my" awards on the Sunday, Nov. 29 NBC-TV special presented by the National Academy of Record ing Arts and Sciences include Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin, Duke Kllington. Nov. 10 Mo.v on Alil.-'iV will hunor Dr. Thomas Dooley, the American whose clin ics have helped Laotians battle sickness. Lowell Thomas, a re luctant star of NBC-TV's This Is Your Life earlier this season, re turns Wednesday to help Ralph Edwards honor a friend. Director Normal Jewisoa has quit CBS TV's Big Party. Producer Perry Laflerty and Abe Burrows will handle the directorial chores. 5 Persons Killed In Collision Of Two Automobiles MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.
