Truman still is hurt, angry and ready to try njain to prevent nomination of LETTERS Maximum length 300 words. No anonymous letters but trus name will be withheld on re quest. Dear Editor: Could I give you the side of the residents of the volley outside the La Grande city limits to the proposed lagoon type sewage dis posal? How would you feel, if after you had spent years im proving your property, a neighbor moved in who, caring nothing for your land values, let his property become unsightly and smelly. That is the condition your lagoons would create for its neighbors. I certainly would not believe that thousands of gallons of untreated sewage pumped into a lagoon dailv would rot create an Oder and fly problem: common sense would allow no other beli"f. The City Commission argues that this would cost less than a proper sewage treatment plant. The original cost would he less, yes, but have you considered tin' cost the city would incur in de fending the suits that would cer tainly he filed against it for loss of property values and contamin ation of ground waters? The la goon system works whero the soil conditions are favorable, but this Valley has no hardpan to hold the lugoon waters, and could not help but contaminate the under ground water systems. The only way to stop this would be to arti ficially seal the entire bottom of each 4.i acre pool, and what would this cost? We outside the city limits try to be good neighbors to La Grande end its merchants. We patronize your stores and your parking Okieters, and I imagine that i" this patronage were stopped for even one week it would make a great difference in revenue to the merchants. In return you give us your unwanted cats and doss, your kids with their guns after school, weekends', and all sum mer, and now you want to give us your sewage, loo. That wc don't want or need. I think you will find it far less expensive in the long run to gt a good sewage treatment p'ant and be good nei ghbors to your good customers. Yours truly, Mrs. A. K. Stevtvson ior president Th s should surprise no one. It is a fact that Stevenson in 192 was Truman's hand-picked Demo cratic nominee for the presidency. That proved to be the beginning of the er.d of a beautiful friend ship. I'our years later, Truman was back at a Democratic national convention to lead the campaign to prevent Stevenson's renomina ting Truman stated his objections simply, asserting that Stevenson did not have what it took to win an election. . . . . Well, maybe, Trumai said on second thought, Stevenson might win if he had the right kind of help, help from Truman, for ex ample. The former president's man in 1956 was Averell Ham man. a no-questions- asked Tru man Fair Dealer. It is reasonable to believe that" Truman has an other such in tow for 1960, Harri man having been knocked out in h:s gubernatorial contest with Nelson A. Rockefeller. In tow for 19W) probably is Sen. Stuart tvmirgton who fits the Fair Deal oattern. He is one of the Democrats given a 100 per cent good voting record by the left wing organization, Americans for Democratic Action. Stevenson, of course, firmly dis avows any desire for another pres idential nomination. The political pros believe, however, that he is likely to be tapped unless the 1960 convention can name some other Democrat on an early ballot. Stevenson would be a magic name witli which to break a deadlock. Truman would be in there pitch ing for Stevenson now" as in 1952 if Stevenson had been more con siderate of his great and good friend after that first nomination. Truman made it all dear in the second volume of his memoirs. There are paragraphs of unquali fied praise for Stevenson in that beck. Those paragraphs are, in effect, a defense of Truman for har.dpicking Stevenson in 1952 to succeed him in the White House. The praise goes flat, however, under pressure of subsequent par agraphs of which these two are examples: "But. Stevenson s altitude (in 1952 1 toward the president he hoped Id succeed was a mystery to me for some time," Truman wrote. "And, 1 believe Stevenson made several mistakes. ..whether this was due to the urgings of his advisers or bad information or perhaps to the contagion of other good citizens as a result of read ing the anti-Democratic press, I do not know. "The first mistake he made was mm 43e QUOTES IN THE NEWS United Press lnlernolion.il CHARLOTTESVILLE. Movietown figured Dean would he in the unemployment lines after the team broke up. but Martin moved from TV to dra matic roles in movies with hard ly a hitch, making him one of the few video stars to switch to the big screen successfully.
