Hudson proved to be an excellent host and supplied a fine knack for light comedy. Despite the un even start, the commercials and station breaks, the party was a success. To quote a pjhrase from a song in Bob Hope's first hour special of the season Thursday nioght: He muddled through. The NBC-TV special was un inventive, generally unfunny and appeared under-rehearsed. Hope's guests were Dean Martin, Natalie Wood and four of Big Crosby's: Gary, Dennis, Philip and Lindsay. Since they had little to do, the boys concentrated on trying to upstage each other and anyone else around. I thought Gary came out ahead. He manipulates his lips in a pardon-the-expression, Jerry Lewis pout. Along with Hope's op ening monologue the Dodgers, Khrushchev, President Eisenhow er's golf and cooking hobbies, re ceived his attention), there was a skit that attempted to poke fun at TV's crime show trend but failed to generate steam and was sadly dilfused. Another segment featured Bob and Dean swapping restaur ant jokes and their usual sottir voice badinage saved the night from being a total loss. 'Adult Classification' Of U.S. Movies Is Considered By RICK DU BROW UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD UPI i The movie industry is considering aJult clas sification of films because of a wave of criticism, says Eric John ston, president of the Motion Pic ture Association of America. Johnston told a news conference Monday that although he was personally opposed to any form of censorship, the association was discussing the matter of classifi cation with "Catholic, Protestant. Jewish, women's and other groups. "The movie code has not changed so much. It is the sub ject material in books and other creative works." Johnston said that the same people who complained a few years ago that movies were not Cheap Fallout Shelter SARASOTA. Fla. "Classification is a difficult matter." he said. "Firs!, who is to enforce it: we don't own our theatres any more? Second, in other countries of the world there are laws by which theaters would lose their licenses if children were to see such films even with adults. "In this country, there are no Federal laws governing the mat ter. The pioblcm is, if we take it upon ourselves to classify movies, do we elicit the kind of censorship we have been trying to avoid and light in various slates'.'" Johnston said there has been criticism of motion pictures in some instances for their adult subject material. '"But," he said, "we must re me nlhr, we imported about 760 films, and we produced only 218 in Hollywood. In all. some 288 pic tures got the Movie Code's Seal of App:oval. and most .of the criticism was directed at those pictures without the seal." Johnston said that on a recent trip to France, certain high mem bers of the Degaulle government were concernod about whether son.e exported French films were giving a "false picture" of the way of life in their country. "But I am personally opgiosed to cens orship in any form." Johnston said. "The abuses and difficulties that it brings with it are greater tha t those incurred without cen sorship."
