Observer, La Orando, Pie., Fri., Oct. 9, 1959 p,,)e 7 U.S. Feeling j Pinch From Steel Strike j WASHINGTON ' I PI ' Gov ernment economists said today the steel strike slopped the na tion's overall economic growth in the past three months and even may have caused a small set back. They tentatively estimated thai the total output of goods a'ld serv ices in July. August and Septem ber remained at the $4M.3uo.uuO. COO annual rate posted in the pre vious three months. But some la'.e figures on inventories may short that the economy actually slid backward from the Apni-May-June level Refrain Fjrom Guessing These calculations were imre pessimistic than earlier forecasts made on the assumption thai the steel strike would not lasl more than two months. This is the 85th day of the strike. The economist;, refrained from guessing how the economy might perform in the last three moiths of this year, other tha-. to say it definitely would forge ahead once the steel mills resumed op erating. Ea.lier conlidence that steel and steel-using industries could make up fcr the strike with brisk October - November-December activity was missing. Some olficials said that if President Ei senhower used the Taft-Hartley Act to send the 500,000 striking steel workers back to work for 80 days, the overall damage would be kept down. Catch Up In I960 Othe-s said that even with use of the Taft-Hartley law some of the lost production could not be made up until early 10. A national production rate of 500 billion dollars a year, once considered ai outside possibility for the close of this year, now appeared delayed at least until imo. Commerce Secretary Frederick II. Muller said in a New York speech the high rate would be achieved early next year '"unless the effects of the prolonged steel strike upset the apple cart." Some economists said the 500 billion dollar rate would not be reached tefore March. Mrs. Hannah Of Union Recovering From Sickness UNION (Special) Mrs. John Sanscm of Hermosa Beach, Calif- was called here by the illness of her mother, Mrs. Hannah.
